Tom Kite won the US Open at Pebble with a key chip in on the short par three (105 yards, downhill). What club did he hit off the tee?

If you have your latest issue of Golf Magazine, Kite explains only 1 of the last 30 players hit that green in regulation. So what iron did he hit on this short hole? (The chip in was a lob wedge.)

Wild guess - 6-iron.

I know he bombed hit tee shot on 18, and shot even par when everyone else was blowing up, but I don't remember much else of that year.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

I don't have or subscribe to the magazine (maybe I should?), but I suspect it's going to be something we'd consider too much, like a 6-iron.

There was only one number that mattered that day, 72, his score.

Kite hit a 6 iron. Just goes to show its the shot, not the distance or the number on the club that matters. Still, on a 105 yard hole it is pretty brutal when only 1 in 30 pros (and those are the ones with the lowest scores going into the last day) can hit the green. I've heard another pro talk about that hole when the wind is super high -- brutal is the right word.

Those are great stats - 105 yds (!) with a 6 iron. Of course, his lob wedge was nearly the length of a regular approach shot.

One of my favorite holes in golf... Maybe I'll get to play it someday.

Anyone know if #7 has been lengthened for this year's Open? Hope not.

Cheers,

Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course... the space between your ears.
