Long Irons vs Hybrids

Often just the cost of a new grip, and you'd probably have to regrip them. I've met clubmakers who could do it without harming the grip, but that's rare.

See, reasons like this is why I wish the Somers Golf Center would give me more hours. I need more money! I wish the Nike grips were available for buying. I like consistently from one grip to the other...

I don't hit any hybrids. I've only tried a couple times, but I am generally able to hit my 4I well enough that I stick with it. I've been thinking about adding a 3H to the mix, but the truth is that my 5W covers the distance well enough and I think I'm happy with my bag as it is. I just added a 3W that Mizuno describes as a "utility fairway wood." It's from ca. 2001, which IIRC was when hybrids were still a fairly new concept. At least, the beginner set I bought in late 2000 was all irons down to a 3I, which you don't see any more. It's a bit narrower down the line than a typical fairway wood, but still decidedly a wood with a long shaft. I absolutely love it.

Hopefully you don't need too many more hours to cover a regripping, it should only cost a few bucks...

Hybrids, yeah, but "driving irons" have been around for a long time. How long have you been playing?

Why cut it down if youre hitting it great choking up a inch. Look at AK , he chokes up on all his sticks. Your 16, your probably growing like a weed, keep them as they are I say. But for future reference, a quick shaft cutting lesson, there are two ways to do it. One is you hack off the grip chop off an inch throw on a grip and move on. If you have a guy that experienced with golf clubs he can do what is called tipping it. This is where you cut some off the skinny end of the shaft ( where it meets the hosel ). Cutting this end shortens the club and stiffens the shaft quite a bit more. For example my rifle 6.0's are tipped and now play to about 6.3 .

Easy to hit off a tee,but if your mechanics are not sound then hybrids can really punish you off the fairway.I carry irons up to 4 iron.The Mactec Magregor I use is a joy to hit even the 3 which I don't take due to keeping my bag balanced.I get about 185 with the 4 iron then I have 2 Benross 20" and 17" hybrids.In the light rough from 180 out is where I first started using them,then when my contact started improving,from a tighter lie.They take practice because the lower lofted hybrids can expose your swing.They reward you with incredible distance once you realise that you don't have to swing out of your shoes to hit them.I had a cheap Ram fx9 16" hybrid and during those calm summer evenings I've hit it 260 plus on a number of occasions.I find them plenty long enough for a first shot,anywhere between 210-250 average,and you won't lose many balls either.

I would also like for this to be an open debate for long irons versus hybrid clubs. I'm a long iron supporter!

Yo might be biased. I used to have a SQ Sumo2 hybrid, then I ditched it for a SQ Sumo hybrid. Hated both of them. I carry a 3 iron, so I guess I am a long iron supporter, but my 2 hybrid is my go to lay up club, so I guess I am a hybrid supporter.

An iron used for driving! Bingo, I'm smart.

I see it's larger and has a long shaft... So it's just an iron to tee off with that's easier to hit than a long iron?

what ever happened to driving irons? I would love to have one. Am really hitting my irons good. Hitting my 5 around 210 now, a comfy 205 club. I play a very short course, so a driving iron would be something I'd be very interested in

      Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.

      I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.

      I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
