I just heard on SportsCenter that both John Smoltz and Tony Romo are going to attempt to qualify for the US Open. Do you think either one has a shot?

I don't think either has a shot at getting into the Open but I do think they have enough game to make it past regionals and into their sectional qualifier. IMO that's a pretty impressive accomplishment right there.

Really? I think Smoltz should have a decent chance. He plays to a +2 normally but because he's such a competitor I'm sure he's kicked up the practice when he decided to shoot for the Open. Especially considering, he doesn't have to leave his house to practice like crazy! Also, unlike other amateurs, he won't be dealing with the same kind of nerves. Sure, he'll get nervous and it'll be a different rush from baseball, but when push comes to shove he thrives in pressure situations.

Check the handicaps of guys playing in your state amateur events and you might be surprised. Being a plus at your local club doesn't always translate into doing well in competition.

The fact Tony Romo is so good at golf baffles me. How can you be that good at two different sports that require significantly different skill sets.

Besides golf, what other sport is Romo good at?

Smoltz likely will not make it but I voted for him. I've seen him play and he really is talented, but the US Open is a cruel test and very hard to crack. I think the time will come for Smoltz when he tries to qualify for the Seniors or Champions Tour. I guess we will see.

Good friend of mine has been paired with Romo in Open qualifier before... Romo hits bombs off the tee and has a solid game... Whether or not he can compete at National Championship remains to be seen... I've heard Smoltz is the real deal... Never seen him play golf but if the stories are true he has a chance.

Sam Saunders missed with a 69 today. I think he's the first alternate though.

It sounds like if any pro athlete has a shot Smoltz would be the one to do it but I still don't think he has a snowball's chance in hell. Admittedly, I've only ever seen Romo play once in some celebrity tournament that was on TV but there was no way his game looked anywhere near good enough to qualify for any pro event, let alone the US Open.

Smoltz shot a 6 over 76 yesterday and missed the cut to the sectional qualifier by 6 strokes...

It's amazing how much people underestimate how HARD it is to qualify let alone, play golf professionally.

    • Day 133: did a stack session.
    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
