His friend was wrong. Contrary to popular belief, that is the true definition of "rub of the green". When a ball is deflected by an outside agency you play the ball as it lies unless relief is allowed under a rule because of the lie. Sometimes the ball bounces good, sometimes it bounces bad. The ruling is the same in any case.

So true! I sliced a ball over the OB stakes so viciously it bounced off the stucco on a house and back onto the fairway. Ball washer, house, beverage cart...play it down!

Holy hosel rocket batman! Tell him to clean the ball before he tees it up next time. Glad nobody got hurt.

Well, there is the question of whether the ball washer was his caddie... in which case it's a penalty, whether his ball washing towel was wet or not.

Iv'e seen this on the LPGA too. Someone hit the powerlines and even though it was still a perfect drive, still they had to replay the shot without penalty.

Dad's course in NC has power lines that come in to play off the tee on a hole, and local rule is replaying the shot without penalty. Ball washer? Sorry, no dice.

You don't get a free pass for sucking.

HAHA, that should be everyone's first thought when they have a rules question.

    • Day 44 (7 Mar 25) - It’s Friday, so it was the weekly round I play with the men’s group.  Solid day scoring wise for me - 42 front/ 41 back for an 83.  Of the 8 pars - 6 were up and downs (yeah buddy, those short game drills are paying off).  Best hole of the day was #13, a pretty straight up par 5.  Third shot was a 90 yarder - I played the INDI 50° to less than 2’ for a kick in birdie.  Its siblings were on as well - it was a short game kind of day.  It was not all good stuff with 3 dbl bogies….missed opportunities hurt the score still a great day to make the most of nGIR (thanks Erik for the teaching on this in Lowest Score Wins).
    • Day 158 - 2025-03-07 Edited a podcast, submitted my PGA award "stuff," and… got some wedge work in. Long day tomorrow so it's going to be tough.
    • There was also a partial tear of my rotator cuff. I see what you mean and no my hips and torso have nothing to do with my bicep.
    • Indeed. It is. RIP to them both. All-time scene here from Unforgiven:   "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it."
    • Day 28: 3/7/25 Plenty of putting through 50 mm gates today.
