Srixon Trispeed Tour - Demoed

A while back there was a thread about the Trispeed, and a poster was asking about the Trispeed tour.

Having played (and liked) the Trispeed, I bought a sleeve of the tours to play with today. Winds were gusty today, and I was hitting the ball pretty decently, so I've got a fair amount of input at this point

To be brief, I really liked this ball quite a bit. It's noticeably softer around the green than the standard Trispeed, but still doesn't quite feel like a tour-level urethane ball.

For those who care:

After a bit of chipping and putting, I was able to gain a good feel for the ball. I was using my white-steel 2 ball today, and the firmer feel was very nice on long and short putts. Greenside spin was better than I expected, right between and NXT Tour and ProV1.

This ball is long off the tee. Safe to say one of the longest balls I've played. I seemed to pick up another 7-10 yards off the driver, and the feel off of my driver and hybrid was very satisfying. Impact is a bit more distinct than a urethane ball, however not at all harsh or "clicky" feeling. Side spin was a bit more off the driver than the standard Trispeed (as advertised) however my misses seemed quite minimized compared to a B-330S and ProV1/x. For what it's worth, it seemed to mitigate sidespin a bit more than a NXT Tour.

Feel with the irons was good, although less noticeably different against similar balls. Seemed to pick up a 1/2-club distance across mid and short irons too. Approach shots did not spin back, even well struck wedges from 80-120 out hit and sat within 14". Mid irons were similar regardless of the wind direction, nothing rolling out past 2 feet. I was suprised not to see any zip back on a few hot approaches, however it was pretty easy to predict what the ball was going to do within a few shots.

For reference, I hit several shots from 120 out with my 52 to compare this ball to a One Tour, ProV1x and NXT Tour and a Pinnacle something or other. The One Tour and ProV1x backed up 6", the NXT released about 16," the Trispeed Tour around 11" and the pinnacle about 4 feet.

I was also impressed with the way the ball flew in the wind. Approach shots that I expected to lose 1 - 1 1/2 clubs with into lost 1/2 to 3/4 of a club on several occasions. Similarly, tee shots into the wind were better than I expected (275 into a 20 mph wind, average drives in the 295 range).

I didn't have too many chances for delicate greenside shots today as the stars were aligned and my GIRs were a bit more than normal, although the ball sat down acceptable on the few finesse shots I hit. I didn't get the feeling that it would ever behave like a "high spin" ball for flops to tight pins, for what it's worth.

Feel free to fire away with anything I missed. In summary, I liken it to the NXT Tour more than anything, providing a bit more feel and accuracy. For $7.50 on the counter, these are going to see a few more rounds in my bag for sure. I'll be in CA this week playing a few nicer courses, so I'll report back on their behavior with faster greens if I can.

The past 12 months I've been switching around between Nike Vapors, NXT Tours and more recently the Bridgestone B330RX, but have yet to establish a firm favourite.

I think it's a good compromise ball. Being a grad student, I can't really afford to lose our cut-up too many premium balls before it takes a chunk out of the grocery budget.

I think that Srixon may have something with their progressive density core, it really seemed to work well on all clubs. Add to that (& above) the cover looked as new after 14 holes of play.

i find the regular Trispeeds actually spin quite a bit
my last round i hit an 8i absolutely flush and on the screws on a 165 yds par 3, TRYING to get it there (lost a club distance w the PJX's) and no word of a lie sucked it back 12 feet
i didnt realize it was that much until i was actually on the green
had a few others that round too that spun more than normal

i will add though, these Trispeeds are awesome in the wind

Interesting! I'll try and play the tours on a day w/out wind to see how mid and short iron spin changes.

I think the Trispeed Tour is an outstanding mid-range ball, but I question whether it's worth the price (even as a devotee of the previous-generation Trispeed). The old Trispeeds were priced at $21-25 a dozen, and I wouldn't question purchasing them at that price. But now that the Trispeed and the Tour sell for $30, I can purchase a box of Z-Stars and a box of AD333s (whose latest update is an improvement over the last ball) for the same price as two dozen Trispeeds. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take the former.

That is a great point....the price point of the original tri's is what attracted me to them...a $25 was reasonable enough even for a hack like me..but taking it to $30 makes it more of a stretch...specially now that I can find Gamers for less than $20, granted they fray far more, but a very playable in every condition.

I tried the TriSspeed Tour first liked everything about the performance, but seemed to give up some distance off the tee with driver. The Tri-Speed flat out flies for me with all my clubs, driving farther and straighter than ever before, but the greenside spin seems to be lacking with all chip, pitch shots releasing on the green and sometimes that has been a bad thing. Having said that the local club had a dozen of the new Tri-Speeds on the shelf with a free towel, and I bought them, so I will have to adapt to the greenside feel.

i won a bunch of closest to the pin's in our Tuesday night mens league and you get a $10 GC for each win
i had about 6 of them and picked up some more TRISPEED's...BUT at a wicked price
usually they are $29/doz and i got 6 sleeves for $32 at my club! was pretty stoked about that

and i was able to get 1's and 3's (i alway try to sneek these in when at GT! haha)
