If you shortened your current putter, why would you need a new grip?...

A good club repairer can blow the grip off.

I honestly have no idea.. I have never had a club shortened, but I am sure they can take the grip off some how.. Hell I can almost roll half the grip off my 7 iron with my bare hands.

Edit: Alomar beat me to it.

Yes... the grips is rippedoff and the shaft is butt cut. People say it changes the weight and balance of a putter but I have never noticed.

If you take it to just about any golf shop (including Dicks or Golf Headquarters for example) you can pick out a grip from their selection and they'll cut off the old one, cut down the butt of the shaft, and put on the new grip all in about 5-10 minutes if they're not busy. I had a club cut down and regripped not too long ago and it cost me $12 or so. Definitely not a major expense and worth it if you want the putter shorter (my dad makes clubs also, so I've had some experience tinkering with regripping, etc. on my own as well).

Shortening your putter is going to change the total weight of the putter, and therefor the swing weight. Shortening it will cause the balance to be different. You may or may not notice it.

the grip can be saved, any repair shop can do it, if they say they cant, go somewhere else. the only reason a grip cant be saved is if you have a few wraps underneath the grip and want them taken away, the rubber has been stretched.

dont worry about cutting the shaft, you can always have it lengthened if you dont like the shorter length. the shorter the putter length the lighter the clubhead will feel, its swingweight. thats why scotty cameron putters have different weight inserts for the 33' (20g), 34' (15g), 35' (10g), cutting a 35 with 10g weights to 33 would feel light, if it feels too light put some lead tape on

Last summer, I won a putter fitting at a Golf Galaxy demo day. As a result, cut 1" off the shaft (guessed this on my own), had the lie flattened a degree **, loft increased two degrees, and swing weight changed from C7 to D4.

**As a result, I have quit missing putts to the left so often.

Clubfitter and the pro there both said the average golfer could use a heavier putter swingweight. Might try a full fitting, if you like the putter.

Rego suggested lead tape. A couple of post-market companies now make lead buttons which are thicker than a single layer of tape, and show the gram weight on the card before you pop them off and apply them.

I've had nearly all my putters cut down to 32" or 33". The weight and balance has been pretty good, but you can always add some lead to either end to get a different feel. It helps to use putters that feel heavy to begin with. I have an older Taylormade heel shafted putter, which I had cut down to 33" and put a Golf Pride Crown Jumbo grip on it. It was very heavy before it was cut, but now it feels pretty good. I also have a Dynacraft milled putter which has been cut to 32". It's got a Winn AVS Jumbo grip on it, and also was fairly heavy at first. The TM is my fast green putter, and the Dynacraft is my slow green putter. My primary putter, a Lynx USA #6, is about 34", and has a Lamkin grip on it that's thinner than normal at the top (I putt cross-handed).

33 is a great length for a putter, I have a 31" right now, and I want to add 2", could I do this myself????

Sure, it's fairly easy, you just need to get an extension. They sell them in most clubmakers catalogs.

back in high school i had the wilson 8802 putter, only problem was it was way to long at 36 inches. That handle use to get caught on my shirt when I would swing, I hated that. Now my putter is 34 inches and it is perfect

It's pretty easy to do it yourself- if you have an old shaft that you don't need, cut a bit off that will slide nicely into the butt, the taper will help. Press it in tight, cut it to you so you have an extra 2", tape up the end so there is no step and you are ready to fit the grip.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
