Should he bother playing in the champions tour?
He's got a scoring average of 67.1
Pavin is the next closest with 68.4

He's played in 8 tournaments, made 8 cuts, 3 wins, 2 seconds and finished 10th or better in the rest.

He's shown he can play on the PGA, why does he have to go around hammering the old guys?

He doesn't have to do anything, he elected playing the Champions Tour himself, could be playing PGA if he wanted.

I understand why someone why win tournaments on one tour instead of finishing in the middle of the pack on another. He's said he wants to play some events here and some there, but will primarily focus on the Champions Tour.

Tom Watson has shown he can compete at the PGA Tour, but at some point most go over to the Champions Tour, making appearances at majors and other big tournaments.

Freddie is just doing what every other golfer who turns 50 does. In 1997, Hale Irwin, who was only 52 had 9 wins on the Champions tour. So I would say what Fred is doing is nothing new.

He's doing the smart thing. He can play on the PGA for another few years and most likely won't win.Or he can play the Champions and win regularly, rake in the cash and raise his profile even further.

Because he can.

One good thing about the Champions tour, when Freddie's in the lead the Golf Channel will show him instead of Tiger Woods.

How's that? Both of Freddie's wives passed away (2001,2009).

Did not know that. In light of the facts, my comment is tasteless and I regret it.

Yeah but that scoring average is based on the Champions Tour where the courses don't play as tough/long as the main tour, so wouldn't this change if he was playing on the main tour this season?

This usually happens on the Champions Tour. The talented new guy dominates until the next really good 50 year old comes along. The Champions Tour would be more interesting if Greg Norman played in more events. Vijay and Kenny Perry aren't far off, and will likely be the next Champions Tour dominators. Unfortunately, we will likely less and less participation as the best golfers from the last 15-20 years have really made a lot of money.

I knew his second wife died, didn't realize the first did. Pretty amazing for someone his age. As far as playing the Champions tour goes, I hear a lot of the guys say they just enjoy playing with their old buddies and playing new sites. I'm sure that is fun.

I would love for it to be my "retirement"

Are you supposed to retire when you have shown that you are better than the rest?

You will find that these guys love to compete and will compete for as long as they can. Not to mention the money. Does a local Club Champion stop playing golf when he wins the championship 3 times in a row?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

He will start to fade prob in 5 years..

If the new old guys weren't winning we probably wouldn't be talking about the Senior tour.

I was watching the champions tour and it sounded like most of them like doing it because the pressure isnt there to win (they still want to win of course) they do it because its fun and what better way to retire then play golf with your buddies...
