I couldn't agree more. I don't usually tape my swing unless I'm not hitting the ball well. That said, I taped myself last week and noticed two things:

1. I was setting up open almost every time despite using alignment sticks. My feet appeared square but my thighs and shoulders clearly weren't.
2. There was an almost imperceptible shift of my hips BACKWARDS (yes opposite the ball) when I started my backswing. I'd estimate it wasn't more than 1 inch but it was definitely there. I have NO idea where it came from nor that I was even doing it.

I fixed both issues and started hitting the most beautiful 3wd shots you've ever seen. 245 yards with perfect trajectory and a sweet looking little draw on the end. One guy one the range even said "damn that's a nice ball flight". I told him I might give up actually playing rounds and just hit balls on the range for the rest of the season!!

using a camera is great if you know what you want your swing to look like. just dont go overboard and continually tinker with your swing for the whole season or anyting.

i agree. also another bad thing with taping it is sometimes you may see something you don't like, but have no idea how to really fix it, yet you know it looks wrong (more for the beginning players out there)..

overall it's still a huge benefit to see your swing. usually once every few weeks i'll tape mine to see how i'm progressing with the things i am currently working on.

If you guys are Iphone users and looking for a cheap alternative there is an App called the iswing and it gives you about 8 frames to peek at and can give you a decent indication of what you are doing if you know what you are looking for.

you need both a Face on view and a down-the-line view to get all of your swing.

I find the Face on view will tell you more than DTL angle will as DTL is used to check swing plane mostly

You don't need a high def camera. We use our point and shoot camera's video and the V1 home edition free download software. If you've ever had a pro use video and the draw the different lines on the screen, you can do the exact same thing and see if you're in plane or if you're coming over the top or if you're dipping your head...whatever. We usually do both dtl and head on. It's easy and it doesn't cost anything.

How do you set up the camera to record the swing? Do you actually lug a tripod out there or do you just balance the camera on your bag or something?

I get a friend to hold the camera for me.

You could set it up on the bag though.

I use one of those small tripods with the bendable legs and just hook it on to my bag, a club in my bag, etc. Cost me about $12.

I'd like to see my swing in slo-mo some time but I'm scared of what I'll find, as the thread title suggests. I've never really had lessons or swing coaching at all, it's pretty much self developed via years of practice and watching others. Not that it would make a pro coach barf or anything but I bet I have some funky quirks in there.
