Ok. I have seen that many people have for example, 3-6 Titleist AP1's and then 7-P AP2's (or the other way around). Also Paul Casey in his "In the Bag Review" shows that he has Procombo Oversized for the 3i, then he has VR Split Cavities for the 5-6i and last he has VR Blades for 6i-LW. So I wanted to know what you guys think about mix and matching your iron sets, or is it on forgiveness?

I think mst golfers do it so that they get more forgiving longer irons while they are able to control the scoring clubs (short irons and wedges) more. personally it's not something I have never considered but if I feel that my ball striking has improved a lot (I would base it on a very good GIR %), sooner or later I will switch to bladed short irons (8-PW) just because I want a little lower flight with a little more spin, which I found to be the case when hitting the Titleist 710 MB vs. 710 AP2. Some have different long irons, like Casey, because they found something they're comfortable with which has the exact trajectory and playability they're looking for. I think in some cases it's a good idea but for now I'm sticking with my all Titleist 710 AP2 iron set. The only club I would consider switching to, is an 08 AP2 3-iron because it looks nicer than the 710 AP1 and has the same shaft that my current set has (mine are standard DGs vs. High Launch DGs) so that the trajectory would be a little higher.

I tried it with a couple of slightly more forgiving long irons I already owned, but didn't care for it. Never considered consciously purchasing a mismatched long-iron for forgiveness, but I do switch out 2-iron, 5-wood, and 19* Hybrid depending on the weather.

You can mix and match different models of irons, or you can get a set which comes that way. About 2005, the Titleist 735CM model came out. It has full cavity on long irons, light cavity on the middle irons, and muscleback in the short irons.

Ping promotes the Ping I15s as having progressive head design - larger head and cavity for longer irons, smaller head and less cavity for shorter irons.

Back in the 1970s, some tour pros started using Ping cavity-back 2 and 3 irons instead of those which came with the set. Cavity made the long irons easier to hit.

You can do this with the short irons and wedges, if you practice a little with them. I use a Callaway X-Forged SW which is pretty close to a blade. It's a short-shafted club and thus easy to control, but I had to practice with it some to get is zeroed in. Really works great now.

But, a blade or player's club in a longer-shafted 5 iron is out of the question. I just don't have the skill level to make it work.
