Can someone explain to me why Phil is pounding the ground on the tee box when he is hitting a FW? I've seen him do it for every tee shot he hits with the FW. It looks almost like he is trying to create a small dent in the ground with the toe of the club, and then he sets the ball down into it.

If he doesnt put a tee underneath afterwards when denting the ground, the only reason for doing this is lower launch/ more roll with a FW. You can also just step on your ball on the teebox if you like to tee off that way.

That makes sense. Thanks. If I did that I'd probably never get the ball of the ground.

I guess you're allowed to do this and it isn't building a stance. I see guys do this, especially at longer par-3s, all the time. I offer them a tee when I see it.

Won't a tee pushed far into the ground do the same job?

I remeber Laura Davies used to (maybe still does) do this for her driver. (I assume other clubs too)

Huh- what should that accomplish? Its like hitting the ball without a tee, since the ball will sit on the grass and the tee will not interfere with it at all.

my theory has been that it acts like a slope, putting the natural draw or fade on the ball. i saw the hole he did it on yesterday and I remember him hooking it too much, which reinforces my belief.

Sounds like its not working too well, id rather have as flat and perfect lie on the teebox for a par 3. I never use tees for irons or hybrids so the ball sitting up on the teebox grass is what i would prefer, id hit the mound of dirt and send it flying everywhere.

It is to lower the ball flight some. With the mound you have to hit it with a more descending blow that won't pop it up, which may happen off of a tee.

She still does this. She'll walk onto the tee box with a driver and an iron, whack the toe of the iron into the ground to dig up a tuft of turf, put the ball on it, and bang away with her driver. I think it's a British thing.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you use a tee off par 3's to give yourself as much an advantage as possible? Especially as a 28 handicap i would imagine it would help more than hurt?
