I finally broke 80
I have soo close so many times you wouldn't believe it, last Monday I neede just a par on the eighteenth for a 79, I was perfect in the faiirway with my drive and choked and ended up with a double bogey, but today I went out with a 40 and jokingly said to my playing partner I just need to shoot 39 on the back and I've cracked it.
I got to the eighteenth and I have this terrible habit of counting up the card on the eighteenth tee, I realized I had to birdie the eightenth (a 337yd dogleg left) for a 79, I slightly pulled my drive left but it still went about 200yds, I now had to play a draw/hook around a tree to get to the green, I pulled an 8 iron and hit it exactly as I had pictured it, landed on the green and sank a ten footer for the birdie.

I had a 79 about 18 months ago but it wasn't true in my book because two of the guys were talking during my tee shot and I basically shanked it, they imediately appologized and insisted that I replay my shot, I re-took my tee shot and continued on to shoot the 79 but I knew in my mind that it wasn't true, but now I have done it legit.

I sure does, seven of my last twenty scores have been 80/81, each time choking on the last couple of hole but now I have the monkey off my back..............

Congrats. I consistently shoot in the 70's and feel better about a sloppy 79 than a well played 80, it's just one stroke but sounds like a world of difference, keep it up!

Congratulations.

I've shot in the 70s a few times but I can't remember the exact scores as it was a few years ago. So if I was to shoot a 78 tomorrow could I say it was my best score ever. I'm not sure. Kind of annoying! Plus the achievement is more/less impressive depending on the par of the course if its 70/72.

Thanks guys.

It is a par 72 with a slope rating of 68.6/119

Congratulations, I think that's something to be very proud about. I can only hope to shoot a similar score sometime in the near future.

Congrats!

The first time I broke 80, I only needed a double on the par 5 18th hole and ended up making a mess of it, chunking two chips and finally sinking about a 10-footer for 7 and 79.

Great job! I like that you consider the legit score the real milestone, and not the one with the insisted-upon mulligan. Good on you! That is just good golf karma, man. Don't cheat the game, and it won't cheat you. I'm hoping like hell that I can break 90 sometime soon.

I hope it takes you less time than me. I got into the low 90s, & started ripping off 90 & 91 every round, for SIX MONTHES! I just kept choking. Even when i wasn't adding it up as i went. I can only imagine what it takes for someone to focus long enough to break 80 or par.

Well, I went out today at the same course, same tees and did it again

I shot 41, 38 again with two double bogies (on the front) and two birdies. I really didn't feel like I was striking the ball well, I used the trial version of the GolfLogix GPS on my iPhone and got the stats, I only hit 50% of the fairways and 50% of the GIR with 32 putts which gives me an average of 1.78 putts per hole. I had eight putts for birdie and only made two of them, all the ones I missed were either 4-5 inches short or just lipped out. I can't play at all next week, so I will be going crazy untill I can get out on another one of our courses and have another go.

OH man I hope so, I set myself a goal to be a single digit by Jan 1st, I started on Jan 1st this year at 17.8.

On the next revision I have my last three rounds at 79,79 and 81, the 81 was at our toughest course.

Congrats! It's always fun to see the practice that you put in to show up on your scorecard. Keep at it and you'll expect to break 80 more often.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
