What I don't understand is why we the americans aren't raising imortal hell over this disaster! And why we didn't demand 2 months ago that they implode the darn thing to stop it immediately. Greed is the answer to that... as it would permanently shut down the well site. Pure GREED !!!!

It's being underplayed.

You hardly hear about it over here in ireland, I watched a documentary about it and the fact is that this is terrible. Looks like the whole of america's coastline is in trouble.

I know politics are typically avoided on this forum, but since we're in the grill room and anything goes....remember when Katrina hit and Kanye West went on TV and stated "George Bush Doesn't like black people!" He was saying this because New Orleans is predominately black, well, the remainder of the Gulf Coast is predominately blue collar white folks, but no celebs have gone on the record bashing Obama...I love how biased the media/Hollywood is!

Did you also notice how many in Hollywood (such as Mike Meyers, who was on camera with Kanye at the time) made a point of distancing themselves from the comments? Or how much Kanye was made fun of for the comments by the same crowd? Leno didn't drop it for a long time.

Did you also notice how much quicker the Obama administration reacted to the spill than the Bush administration did to Katrina?

I don't think it's the government's job to stop the leak, but I do think it was their job to make sure that BP had an appropriate contingency plan in case of such a worst case scenario like this. So both of them failed pretty miserably before the fact. The regulation watchdogs have been in bed with the oil companies for years, figuratively and literally, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at any corners that may have knowingly been cut to save money at the expense of increased risk.

That's about as far from Obama's fault as anything can be.

Do the rest of you guys really think he has the power (and the money) to just go down there, take over the oil rig and plug it up with a device that nobody has been able to design? On a side note, 3 BP gas stations have popped up within 10 miles of my house. I'm not buying, and I can't believe anybody would.

I wish I could agree that people won't still buy from BP. Maybe they won't for a while, but as soon as they have to start dropping their prices because of it everyone will start going back just to save some money. Getting a bargain always wins out over principle...

Anyways, not buying gas from your local BP isn't hurting BP, it's hurting your local BP franchise owner. Often the gas you buy at BP, Shell, Chevron, Marathon, Texaco or wherever comes from the same place. You may have BP gas at a Shell station or vice versa(I'm not making this up, CNN did a report on it).

Am I saying run out and buy BP, no, but one of the BP's in my hometown recently switched to a Marathon because of this mess. They weren't truly a BP station, just had it on the sign.
Maybe you ought to enquire their affiliation with BP before boycotting, because a lot of times you may be hurting your neighbor instead of Tony Hayward's pocket.

I know it doesn't really matter, but it's sort of the principle of the matter. Plus, the ones near me tend to be a little more expensive than the other stations nearby. Plus, my car really seems to love Hess gas. It gets about 5 mpg better on Hess, and I have no idea why, but I don't question it (and the Hess stations are cheaper). Also none of them are really my "neighborhood stations", they are all a town or two over.

Shindig...without a doubt BP is responsible for the spill. But the Gov't has a responsibility to make sure BP does what they should be doing. From what I can see we have allowed BP to lie about this mess from day one. Also Obama could do two things to help with the clean up. #1 wave the law that doesn't allow foreign ships in our waters. Many country's have volunteered help but are not allowed into our waters to help. #2 There are 2000 skimmers stationed around the US, only 500 are deployed in the gulf. Why because of another law that says you have to have X amount of skimmers located throughout our waters. That's another law Obama could wave but hasn't. I'm not a Rep or Dem, but do think out Gov't is way to bogged down with red tape and BS to get the big jobs done in a timely manner when it counts. Bush failed with Katrina and Obama is failing with the oil spill.

I just think it is very fish that this happened in the midst of the Obama Administration's new energy bill....you know, the offshore drilling and all...but I have been accused of being a conspiracy theorist before.

I do find it hard to believe that we can "send a man to the moon" in 1969, but we can't figure out how to stop this well 40 years later. Must be more to it than my powerplant operating mind can understand....
