I am having trouble deciding which grips to pursue. There are a couple problems, first is size and second is firmness.

For size, both the midsize and 'jumbo' seem to fit, with the jumbo causing my middle and ring finger to just barely touch my palm, and the midsize touching more but I think to an acceptable level. So I'm torn. I wear an XL glove, a tight fit, and could probably play a XXL with a little room. What do you think? Who plays jumbo grips and what size hands/gloves do you have?

Secondly is firmness. Grips like the Multicompound and Tour Velvet Cords are on the firm size, and Golf Pride Tour Wraps are a little squishier, with their website saying they're for mid-speed swings. I have more than a mid-speed swing so this worries me a bit. Should I be focusing more on firm grips meant for faster swings?

Thanks

Your on the right path concerning size. My suggestion... don't get in a hurry... visit various golf shops/stores. Swing the new and used clubs with various grips and various sizes. Then, forget about all the technical stuff, and get the ones than in your mind feel the best. Be patient... your going to be stuck with your final decision.

Yes I would say demo a few out. Grips are $3- $12, if you know how to install them (wich is very easy) you can do allot of demo for very little money. If you have a compressor of somne sort you can even to grips on and off with out much trouble and no damage to them. This coud be reall handy in finding the best size for you. ie go midsized, try them then, take them off and add a wrap of tape and try them again, repeat.

PS ignore the whole glove size thing, it does not toake into a coun the size of your palm, vs fingers and the thickness of your fingers etc. go with the mettod of actually holding the grip in your hand, and swinging it.

Try Golf Pride Dual Durometers - yellow caps. I like them very much:

Also, measure your hand from your wrist in a similar fashion as described in this link. I'm a standard grip, but I like the mid size and have opted for those instead.

I thought about that too. I don't have huge hands length wise, but my hands are very thick. Also, the problem with demoing grips, for me, is that I don't know what would feel right. Does that make sense?

I don't think I know enough to understand what an extra wrap of tape would feel like or if it's better/worse. Blah.

I took a look at the chart, and it puts me at standard, yet there's no way the standard grips fit me. So I donno.. :-?

oh... and remember, the thicker the grip, the more its going to weight.
Jumbo's may make your clubs feel & swing differently (heavier).

I'm a standard on the chart as well. However, I like the feel of mid-size, so that is what I opted for. I have those Golf Pride Dual Durometers on my clubs and couldn't be happier. They don't slip - hot or cold weather.

That's somewhat backwards if you're talking about swingweight. Heavier grips will lower the swingweight. They'll "feel" lighter. Their static weight may be higher.

Here's a pic of me gripping my PW. I think these are standard grips with 2 tape layers, but I have no way to confirm.

Try different grips on your 5, 6 and 7 iron. this will give you a feel for the different types of grip. Then pick the one you are most happy with. This is a good time of year as well because the high humidity will expose the grips with regards to sweat. I went with Golf Pride Tour Velvet midsize. They need to be kept clean to keep the sticky feel, but otherwise I am happy with them.

I can attest to this as a set of MP52s I had came with oversize grips. The club actually felt lighter because you are holding more weight at the top of the club.

To the OP I know what you mean about being unsure of what would feel right, but if you talk to a good pro at a local shop they should be able to help you get something that is comfortable and within a good range for you that it is not negatively affecting your ballstriking.

I think I'm going to take a combo of advice, see a pro and try the two I like the most. As far as re-gripping at home, is it doable without a vice?

Yes. Some use air and I believe you can also soak them (to break down any bond to the shaft)

Pay no attention to the charts, or anyone that wants to measure your hand. Every chart I looked at say I'm supposed to use a standard grip. When I demo clubs with standard grips my fingertips are fully under the heal of my hand. When I was demoing my new irons I asked the pro about grip size and showed him my hand. He pulled a different club with a midsize grip + 3 wraps of tape. I hated the feel of the club, but the thickness of the grip was perfect.

Also note that what you want in a grip will likely change over your career. I used to play tour wraps, and now I'm hooked on the tour velvet.

As others on here have said, any type of correlation to glove size or hand measurement shouldn't lock you into a particular grip size. I wear a a men's large glove and play jumbo grips. I hate the feeling of skinny grips because it causes me to clench down on the grip too much, creating tension in my hands/arms/shoulders.

At the end of the day, the only way to know what grip size you need is to try different grips and see what you like. The only person that can make that determination is you and only you.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.

The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
