looking for a wedge on a budget

I want to ditch my current 56* in favor of a 54*. I would like to spend $40 or less and do not care if it is used. However, I do not know much at all about wedges other than a lot of people like Vokeys and Clevelands. Are Mizunos any good? If so what models? Thanks for any insight, as this is something I will not be able to demo first.

Dis you not want to try a gigagolf 54? I got an email a few weeks ago from gigagolf that said something about them introducing a new wedge design soon. They released a brand new original design driver this weekend

Yeah, I'm not really feeling the gigagolf wedge. It looks nice, but the feel is just not there. I will check into their new wedge though.

If you're anywhere close to a Dick's Sporting Goods, you might drop by to see if they have any in their clearance section. You can get some decent deals on models that are a couple of years old in there sometimes. Also, they usually have a mat you can hit off of to try them out just a bit.

I got an Adams Tom Watson Classic 54/10 last week, and it's fantastic. I took my 53/9 Vokey out of the the bag this weekend and played the Adams, hit it 5 times, and was extremely happy with the feel and results. Can be had for less than $40 shipped from multiple online retailers.

I had been looking at those online, but was not sure how they were (I have heard mixed things). But that is good to hear. Do you like the amount of bounce it has?

I think 10 degrees of bounce is optimal for a 54* wedge. Not too much to hit off of grass, even the sometimes extra thin AZ fairways, but enough bounce to use off the sand or a particularly fluffy lie. I even opened it up and hit a nice flop shot with it. Because of the price you'll hear a lot of "it's good for the money", but it's just a good wedge. I'm not averse to paying more for the club I want, or one that performs better, and my Vokey was worth what I paid. But the TW wedges perform just as well, IMO.

I posted this on another thread, but it still applies....

I totally went through the same thing last year. I decided to rebuild my game from the green to tee. I tested every wedge out there at as many demo days as I could find. What I ended up doing was buying the CG14 52, 56, and 60. I loved them, they felt good, and the spin was excellent.

Then I started looking for replacement irons. That is when I found the Mizuno MP-T wedges. I immediately traded the CG's in on the 47, 51, and 58. These where a little lighter to swing, which actually made the feel better. I am not completely sure how to explain this, but I could feel when I put to much or to little into my swing. I could feel when I hit it wrong, or dead on the sweet spot. Finally, the spin to me was much better because I could control it more. After a year of playing with them, I can get the ball to stop from most distances and lies. This has been the biggest benefit to my game.

You can get the MPT Wedge for $40 used at a lot of places. The sole is amazing when it comes to the way it handle all the different types of lies found on a course.

I built my 54* & 58* with Acer XB Satin Wedges and absolutely love them. I took my CG14's out of the bag I liked them so much.......just seemed like I was able to do more things with them and much better full wedge shots for me. You can get them custoem built for pretty cheap or build them yourself like I did.

I've noticed 54* wedges in the used club bins in several golf shops. Might give them a look.

Also, the Watson Classic is worth looking at.

      Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

      I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.

      I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
