Who here can play on the other side of the ball pretty well? I have tried it a couple times. Sort of a silly demonstration but amusing nonetheless. A while ago I played 9 holes with one of the pros at my course who is left handed and we traded clubs and held a friendly competition. I shot a 66 from the ladies tees and he managed a 54. I think he might have had an advantage though being right handed in everything but golf (Mickelson-esque).

As goofy as it felt I think I could get used to it. I had a couple decent shots and putting was not that bad. Maybe 10 rounds I could get down to 100 on an easy course ~6000 yards. Supposedly Vijay Singh can play to a 6 cap left handed. I'd like to meet a scratch player who is just as good from either side. Anyone try it?

I've had to because a course I played at rented right hand clubs and not lefties. I faired well enough, but it wasn't anything to be proud of.

I'm a natural lefty playing golf right handed. I carry 13 clubs and I'm thinking of carrying an extra left handed PW, for potential trouble shots. Left hand swing doesn't seem foreign to me.

My friend is a lefty and I've practiced with him a few times down at the range.

After a few shots I got pretty good, I was hitting a 6i 140 yards. I normally hit it 150.

One of the pro's at my club can play either handed, he's a natural lefty but learned to play righty so he could teach people better.

I have alway been sort of messed up (cross dominate). I write right, throw a ball left, and was a switch hitter in my little league & high school days. But I now play golf right handed but did play left handed for a couple of years when I first began the game and I suppose still could play left handed. I was injured in the military many years ago and ended up with a left leg shorter than the right by about 3/4" and with some nerve & knee damage. So I play right handed as it just feels better. I'm left eye dominate so maybe that is why.

Same here. I've flirted with the idea of buying a left handed set and playing left handed just to see how it would work for me.

I've gone lefty for a couple of rounds here and there... I've had 2 friends that were lefties and every now and then we would switch bags for 9 holes and play off the the forward tees. Had a lot of fun...

It wasn't hard to get used to but it would take a lot of work to get it to the point where my handicap was the same from both sides... the game is hard enough from one side, let alone trying to perfect it from both

Cheers, Allan

Ever hear of Mac O'Grady. He played the tour for awhile and could break par from either side. He was quite the character, as well.

My college golf coach told me that I had a better swing left-handed than right, but I never pursued it.

I know a pro that got to scratch on both side of the ball, and played for a while with a mix bag, playing wedges on short irons left and longer shots right.

Once in a while I will play in a tournament that has a "wrong drive" contest. You hit one shot wrong handed, if you get it in the fairway you hit a second shot the correct way and get to add them together. It is pretty funny.

Me playing lefty:

I'm not terrible, but not great either. I tend to have quite the hip sway off the ball. The wrist action, hip movements, and footwork all feels awkward.

I hit left with my PW sometimes. I just flip it to that the head is kind of upside down. It works good when my ball is nestled up close to a tree and Im not able to address the ball like I normally do.

    • I am six and a half minutes into this video and honestly don't think I can handle any more of it. I do see some of my swing in his - sucks it inside and gets across the line at the top. He also looks like he comes OTT a little, but is then very in to out. That's probably my cluelessness about the swing showing up though. Did I hear him say he's 15* in to out? That's insane and not something I would think anyone would want to do. I'm surprised he put this out there if his goal is to sell his method to other people, you'd think he'd find someone good who uses it to model it, not himself.

    • I think that would fall under the general umbrella of "kinematics".  And I'm sure that @iacas will correct me if I'm wrong, but in many cases the handle will be almost motionless by the time the clubhead impacts the ball.
    • I don't think it is called anything singularly specific in scientific terms other than how you described it. Some might call it a pendulum motion or something but that's probably super simplistic and not adequate description/definition. Of course, there's a whole gamut/combo of causal physics, biomechanics and geometry that results in the phenomenon.
    • As Erik says, he can correct the Wrong Place mistake by replacing the ball in its original location, see 14.5a, as long as he does it before making a Stroke at the ball.    I agree, and that's one of the worst aspects of being a rules official.  But its also an important part, I'm sure that player learned that one rule pretty clearly, and hopefully has learned to read the NTP and listen on the first tee.
