This may sound odd to some, but I really slice my fairway woods. How do I fix this?????

you can buy 50 fairway woods and see which one doesn't slice for you.

just kidding :)

Slices happen from mainly one reason, out-in path on downswing. there are a buncccch of threads already on how to stop slicing, I say go ready around.

Depends what path of the ball
out in will go a nasty slice
pull slices push slices etc etc
depends what one it is
but usually its because you're trying to swing harder and you're opening your shoudlers up really early

Are you trying to hit "down" on it by leaning your upper body too far in front of it?

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.

Can't really say without more info. Are you slicing it only off the turf or off the tee, too? What kind of slice are you hitting?

Initial guess based solely on your handicap (most likely zero basis in what really might be happening) - you feel like you need to help the ball get airborne off the turf and as a result, are starting the downswing with your arms in an effort to swing harder (and at a steeper angle). This makes you come way out to in and causes the slice. Also, your clubface is probably open at impact since you're thinking you need to get the ball in the air. The end result normally is a push slice. When you make solid contact, it's generally a bit right of your target (but doesn't slice) and when you really mess up, it's usually a 50 foot chunk (with the rare topper).

Or it could be too stiff of a shaft...

Either way, swing easier, keep a solid tempo, and swing that wood the same way you'd swing any other club.

+1, when i do that with the fairway woods the shot starts slightly right but never comes back in.

I had the same issue. My issue was that I was swinging too hard.

Someone on this site mentioned (and whoever it was thank you so much) that it should feel like you're swinging a ball on a string. Once I made this connection I slowed my swing down, and all of my lines started falling into place. It also feels like my hands are way in front of my clubhead.

Try playing the ball back one ball width further back than where you are now. I found that I can take an easy swing and make good contact this way and still get the ball up. For me, it is 2-3 ball widths off my left heel.

I have no problem getting the ball in the air, I think that I just lean forward like somebody else mentioned, because I only do it about 75% of the time, which is enough lol

This is ineresting, I hadn't thought about that. I plan on playing this weekend so I'll see how that works....Thanks,

Could really be a number of things causing a slice. I worked on fixing mine yesterday and it was mainly that my back leg wasn't solid/steady enough on the backswing as well as my head (spine angle) moved a bit on the downswing. A video could help if you could get one. Otherwise, there are a bunch of threads on here about fixing a slice, as well as many articles online. Good luck!

I really hate that slice... lost so many balls because of it :(

Cheers,

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
