My goal for this season was to break 90, and I did it about half way in. I wonder now.. can I break 80 this season?

Had 2 birdies, 4 pars, won 2 skins and 2 closest to the pins.

I am a happy camper.

Congrats on breaking 90. The key to breaking 90 for me is making sure you make your bogeys, trim down the doubles and take triples out of the picture completely. The pars and birdies will come, but you have to make bogeys.

I'd put breaking 90 a number of times a goal before seeking to break 80.

Good job breaking 90. Now you have the confidence knowing that you have done it. Try to break 85 first before thinking about 80. From breaking 100 to breaking 90 is difficult enough. From breaking 90 to 80 is extremely difficult. I broke 90 6 years ago and has yet to break 80 (got to 81).

Breaking 80 is NO JOKE. I broke 90 3 years ago and have yet to break 80. Just be prepared for more rounds in the high 90's (even above 100 can happen still) so don't get too upset on those 'off' days. I feel like the 80's-90's shooter is the one who's scores can vary so much on any given day, and they are also the one's (myself included) that need to worry about anger management more, because at this point you feel like you are good enough to make all the shots, but the ones that get away are from 'stupid' mistakes that can/should be avoided. The difference between my 95 round and my 85 round is simply keeping my cool after the blowup hole(s).

Congrats on getting into the 80's... and good luck on your quest to the 70's!

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Today I was getting off the tee fairly well, my ball striking was within.. 20 yards, and my putting was excellent. I think I had two 3 putts, but with the size of the greens at the place I went that isn't too bad (at least that's what I'm telling myself)

I agree with the above posters that one should focus on just breaking 90 a few more times before getting to crazy about breaking 80. I broke 90 early this season (first time since high school golf in Feb 08) and didn't break 90 again until 4 days ago with an 89. The next day I went out and shot 88 at a completely different course (links course).

That felt great and has given me a huge confidence boost. Today I went out at a local par 31 executive course and shot a 39. 2 pars, 6 bogeys, and a double, on a pretty poor putting day. My ball striking though was fantastic because of my increase in confidence, but like PooN said, you can get just a lil' disappointed at yourself knowing that you've jumped to a whole new level of golf. I think as we get more experience, things will click and we'll be able to bump up to the next level.

I'm a big optimist which is why golf is a good sport for me. I don't really get down on myself for hitting bad shots or doing poorly. I'm getting back up on that horse today at a course with lightning quick greens.

2 birdies?
Nice!

I make the odd birdie maybe every second round or so.

I'd love to break 90 at one of the more difficult courses I play at. I broke 90 once this year with an 88 but it was at this really easy, wide open course and I could have done better than 88 if it weren't for my around the green game being so god awful.

Callaway XR 9.5 + 1, Taylormade R15 3 Wood, Burner 3 Rescue, Callaway XHot 5H, Warbird 4H, Nike Vapor Fly 6-AW Irons, Titleist Vokey 54, 60 Wedges, Taylormade Rossa Fontana Putter, Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow.

Best Score 2017:  82 (Traditions at the Glen, Par 70)

Favorite Course - Conklin Players Club (Par 72) - Best Score 86

To get more consistent I need to get my clubs lengthened. I have off the shelf clubs, and I'm 6'3" and I can tell they are way too short, I find myself hunched over even with a 4 iron. On my to do list ;)

Great job breaking 90 Matt! Breaking 80 is a world away, so just enjoy this for now. As for your clubs, ABSOLUTELY get fitted and get them lengthened if needed, I'm 6'4, and when I got mine lengthened it was a world of difference.

Congrats! I am planning to break it here soon, I have been consistently shooting 46's and 45's.....a good day and I will be back in the 80's. Last time I shot 80's was25 years ago when I quit playing regular.

    • Day 87 (27 Jul 25) - Made it an easy session with the wedge this afternoon, worked on staying in the shot and not lifting out - split between low spinners and higher floaters.
    • Shot my new low 72 (par 70) today. Had 5 birdies, also a new best, which included a hole out from the bunker on par 3 6th, and another hole out pitch from 15ish yards on the long par 4, 15th.  Got a couple of other good breaks. Except for an OB drive on 14th (and ensuing double bogey), not much went wrong. All in all I might have used up a year's worth of luck in a single day.
    • Back in the saddle after vacation.  Day 1: played 18. Did not have it, but still battled to an 82. Felt closer to a 90, but that’s fine.
    • Yes, I have seen this from the older crowd that play the 4,700 yard tees and want to know why they get less strokes from there. Always trying to game the system 🤣
    • Day 300 - 2025-07-27 Good 44-ball segment. GSPro was acting goofy, so I just put it on the Quad. Then I hit a bunch of low spinners. Hit 14° down to 9.8° down, with the average closer to 12.3° or so. Focused mostly on the backswing. Right knee good, hands roll up and out a little before laying off (FAR).
