I know these "what equipment should I get threads" must get kind of old but I was wondering if any of you guys know where I could get a decent driver for no more then $50 (If thats even possible)

I broke my Dads at the driving range a couple weeks ago (It was pretty old) so he needs a new one as he wants to start golfing again. Any suggestions would be great if I have to I can just wait a while and raise the budget a bit but I want to get out to some courses soon.

Plenty of good drivers for that kind of money, especially since it sounds like his old driver was pretty old.

Couple I recall from recent trip to Golf Galaxy:

Titleist 975J with Prolite shaft, $14.99
Taylormade 580XD $19.99
Cleveland XL Hibore $51.99
Taylormade '07 Burner $61.99

How about a new Hagen T3 for $9.97 at Dick's Sporting Goods. That won't break the bank.

Anything old on ebay will be in that price point. On of my favorites is the old cleveland launcher and launcher comps. You can pick those up for much less than that. As long as the driver has a big head and .830 COR it isn't going to be any shorter than the latest technology. It might not be as forgiving but it would be fine for the recreational golfer.

I'll second the 975j. Pick up a nice used one. They play just as well as anything out now imho.

A Ping G2 or G5 could probably be had for right around that. If I remember right my last trip to Golf Galaxy they had a G2 for $41.99

You can often find clubs in Pawn shops, I found a Mizuno mx-500 with Aldila NX shaft for $50. The price was also negotiable, w/HC too.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

If you have a GolfGalaxy near you, they always have used clubs for dirt-cheap. I picked up my first driver there for $20.

I recommend the Ping TiSI and TiSI Tec, both of which can be purchased on the used market for well under $50. I use an 8.5* TiSI Tec with the draw inducing hosel as my backup driver and it's still one of the best drivers Ping has ever made in my opinion. As a few others have mentioned, the Titleist 975J is a good driver at that price point too but if you're new to the game or a high handicapper I think the 975D would be a better choice.

Don't have a suggestion on a particular model, but you could try Play It Again Sports if they have them near you. Unless you know your stuff, I'd suggest two trips: first go and see what they've got from makers you recognize. Write down a few notes, then look them up to be sure you get something reasonably recent. Then go back and buy it.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H

If you've never bought from 3balls.com, you will not be disappointed. Most of the time the clubs are better than described.

Hmm well we just went to the driving range and he tried out my Pinemeadow ZR1 (Its a clone of the Ping G10) and he said he did not like how big the head was. He was hitting well with it but he said it was mostly a mental thing. Are all 460CC heads about the same size? I guess next size down would be around 400CC?

Something Callaway - BB, BB Warbird, Hawkeye - they're built like tanks and have 190-250cc heads- like a modern 3-wood. Do it!!

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

The Mizuno MP-1 is a 400cc. Orlimar and Taylormade, just to name two, made drivers with 420cc heads, and Cobras "SS" models came in 427 and 454cc sizes (I wonder where they got that idea)? I doubt either one of those is going to look much smaller than a 460 though.

If you dont buy online, golf galaxy always has about 50 used drivers on their racks. They range anywhere from $15 up to $200 depending on the brand and how old it is. I even saw a Titleist driver there about a month ago. I swear it looked like the thing was hit maybe 5 times and they only wanted $27.99 for it. Had my driver not been less than a year old I would have bought it myself.

Driver: Ping G25
