Today whilst playing I was thinking about joining my school team. Now, I usually shoot high 80's to low 90's, and I really have no clue what my golf team shoots. I defiently dont want to go out there and make an ass of myself in front of my peers. So for those of you that are on or were on their school golf team answer me these:

What was the average score when you play/ed?
Was your coach overly bossy?
What was practice like?
Did you enjoy it?

I don't want golf to become like a job like lacrosse season is.

I shot between high 70's and mid to high 80's in tournaments, and high 30's to mid 40's in 9 hole matches.

Coach was not bossy Practice was fun, got to hit golf balls or play for free each day, and i was with alot of my friends, and made some good friends. I enjoyed it, some of the most fun I had in High School and for the last question about it being a job, you're only going to get out of golf what you put in it. It takes practice to be good, and it really depends if you want to put in alot of work or not. good luck with whatever you do.

It really depends. For 9 holes the top players on my team shot at par or under, the 8th (last) on varsity shot about 40-42, tops on JV shot 42-45, and the last few on JV shot in the low 50s.

My coach was great. Former high school all american, he's won the state title as a coach 5ish times, he has produced 3 all Americans (likely a 4th by the end of next year), 1 player who is on the Nationwide Tour's top 25 and will get his PGA TOUR card for next year, and one player who is on the Hooters Tour. He was very laid back.

Either we played 9 holes or we went to the range and practice green. Or both.

The scores are really relative to your school. I played at a small DIII high school surrounded by farmland, with graduation class of 102. I Played all 4 years on varsity and averaged 45-43-42-41 in my 4 years. I know my scores were nowhere near good enough to play all 4 years on varsity at a bigger school.
We played 9 holes for practice. Worked on hitting shots we would have in a match. Every once in a while we would just go to the range, but because our course did not have a range we seldom did this.
Our coach was very laid back, He wasn't the best golfer but was able to do minor swing fixes to help us out. We had access to other very good and knowledgable golfers for minor tweaks.
I enjoyed every minute of golf in high school, besides the end of the season shanks I got my senior year (cost me all league and a trip to districts). Playing golf everyday after school, 3 of my best friends were on the team with me so that was another plus.

Look online and see if you can find any of your teams scores from the past season to see how your scores match up with the team.

What was the average score when you play/ed? Varsity-80 JV-90
Was your coach overly bossy? Not really, but then again he's also my neighbor
What was practice like? Usually the go out and play 9 or 18. Some days we get a practice round in the day before a big match at that teams course. Some days they will take our wedges to make us maneuver around the course in different ways to improve our overall game.
Did you enjoy it? So far I love it. I like it because it's not like other sports where practices aren't fun. Practices are going out and playing most of the time. Not like other sports where it's drills, plays, etc.

I would definitely try out. What do you have to lose? Their is so much more to gain. Just for being on the team we get free balls, a range pass to a really nice grass tee range, and a membership to our home course(not to mention I'm already a member at another course).

Career Bests:

9 Holes--37 @ The Fairways at Arrowhead-Front(+2)

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Home Course:

1) The Fairways at Arrowhead

2) Mayfair Country Club

Seems like it would be a good idea to ask one of the players on last year's team rather than strangers online. Or maybe ask the coach?

Our school had the following,

To make the team all players usually had to shoot less than 45 per nine holes, ie break 90. To make the JV, i think very low 40's into the high 70's for 18 holes. Though our team was tough, always playing for state championships and had individual play at states. One guy made the US open at bethpage a few years ago. Had a hard time at bethpage, but its cool to see a guy go.

What was the average score when you play/ed? When I started out freshman year I was shooting around 48, sophomore 45, junior 42, this year more like 39 lol
Was your coach overly bossy? Our coach is awesome! Doesn't "coach" much, but he's a great guy.
What was practice like? All we did was play 9 holes pretty much every practice haha

You should go talk with you the golf coach and I am sure that he will encourage you to come out and try out for the team. You will love it, the friendship you make with the other team members will be priceless. Go for it! my son plays for his high school team and enjoys it very much. The other players from different schools are also very nice and overall its a great experience.
