Should I avoid "game improvement irons"?

There is nothing wrong with the MX-23 and they can be easely changed to fit you, just visit a club fitter and get them fixed for you .... great clubs !

Agree, I love mine. They fit into the moderate game improvement category, I believe. Not the shovels that some companies make, but a good bit of forgiveness.

yeah that is what everyone has said to me that they really are fantastic clubs. i guess thats what i will do actually get them fit to me. Save the cash. I mean I do hit them pretty well, maybe a regrip and what not.

Hm, I thought the G15s were 600, but I just looked again and they are 700. Any chance that they would go on sale soon since the season is winding down? Originally I only wanted to spend 500, then grudgingly upped my limit to 600. 700 is REALLY a stretch. I would buy used but I would be nervous spending hundreds of dollars for used clubs on an ebay auction. Plus, its really hard to find left handed stuff used.

The thing is there are a variety of different types on gi irons. Some have basically all hybrids, some are really thick and feel like bricks on a sticks. But, some are able to be gi without sacrificing the classic look. I started with cg gold irons and they were just too bulky for me, but that suits others. My ap1s are actually more forgiving and give a nice light feel.

The reasons not to get a "draw" driver don't really apply to game-improvement irons. If you correct a flawed swing by getting a "draw" driver, and then learn to swing correctly, you now have a "pull-hook" driver.

But if you buy game-improvement irons to improve your consistency with a flawed swing, and then learn to swing correctly, your iron shots will only get better. You should go with whatever irons you hit the best, and odds are those will be game-improvement irons of some sort.

So buy a set of brand new g5's for $400.

I wish I had your "problem". I've been looking for a good set of used G15s and I have a GolfSmith and a PGA Superstore near my place, and both have had lefty G15 sets for a while, just collecting dust. The righty sets usually get scooped up within the first day or two, unless they have weird configurations (maroon dot +2" senior flex or something crazy like that)

Driver: Callaway Big Bertha Diablo 10.5*
Hybrids: Nickent 4DX 3+, 4, 5
Irons: Ping G15 5 - PW
Wedges: Mizuno MP-R (52*, 56*, 60*)
Putter: Cleveland Classic 4 (34" and 35")

If you understand the basics of the golf swing, you can draw or fade the ball with any set of clubs.

Game improvement clubs give you a bigger sweet spot - a bigger margin or error - for hitting the ball. The GI iron heads are only part of the story, there's also the shaft the club has. Clubhead + shaft determines how high the ball will go.

The Callaway X20s I play are Ultra Game Improvement heads, but the Uniflex shafts only give moderate lift (medium flex point). I had tried Ping G15s and Big Bertha irons, but these irons tended to balloon the ball (pop it up too high, bad news on windy days).

If you are getting average clubhead speed, make sure you don't get a shaft that pops the ball up too much.

As for Pings... if you buy new Ping or other brand-name irons, you should be able to get a good trade-in if you switch irons later on.

I just went to dicks and hit the only two lefys they had 6 irons. My swin speed was constant 76. Should I go regular flex? Or is t to hard to tell on an iron. I was pulling everything (draw)

Yeah, go reg, I do not know your age, but even if you get it up most people choose the wrong shaft. Plus you do not want to kill the ball, so getting reg will let you forget that aspect

      It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…

      I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
