Divots give alot of information, including the general direction of the swing path, if the the club's lie is good, and how steep the swing is, if the swing is bottoming out before or after the ball. Its one of the best sources of information besides the ball flight itself and a video camera.

And all we're saying is that no divot

Like you say, if it looks like a uniform strip the width of a club head, it's a good looking divot. If it looks like the toe of the club tore up some turf but the heel just scuffed the grass, then it's an ugly divot. That's what the OP is describing. It doesn't seem helpful to me to pick apart the semantics of his statements---they seem perfectly descriptive.

And to the point about being perfectly straight, a dollar-bill sized divot won't show that much arc to it, just a hint, and that's not the type of uniformity he's talking about. I think there must be a clue---for some reason, he's hitting the ground with the sole of his club flat to the turf but early when he hits fat, and stabbing the toe in when he hits well. I'd worry that even if the contact is clean, if his toe really is down, he's probably somehow compensating for the effective opening of the club face from that tilt, so there's probably something to be fixed. But I dunno what...

Forget about the divot already. Focus on the fact that you hit the ground first and start working on it.
