So today I upgraded my driver from Nicklaus AirMax 440 (at least 7 or 8 years old, probably more) to a 2009 Cobra S1 driver that was 50% off. It was a steal at 150 from Puetz.

I hit so many solid drives today it was unbelievable. The difference between an ultra modern driver and even a 5+ year old one is remarkable. The quantity of the flare shots decreased, the size of the flares decreased and my drives increased by a remarkable amount in distance.

With my old driver I was hitting it 230-250, but my new driver today averaged 260-280, and on the last hole (a par 5 with another par 4 running down the side, aka no trouble) I creamed a low screaming draw 293 yards.

Did I mention this club wasn't fit for me? The performance could be even better. I am very excited to play more golf because distance and accuracy off the tee were killing my 12-14 pars a round. If I can get it in the fairway I have a pretty good chance. Now I have a good chance on 450y par 4s. Today I reached the green for the first time (on #17 on my home course) which is a 450y par 4 with a 6 iron. With my old driver, I'd never dare hit hybrid to get there. The water is too risky.

Hell, the longest I ever hit my old driver was 270 with a perfectly square face and a perfectly square swing path and probably a 1.50 smash factor. Talking completely neutral conditions and roll out, of course.

Cobra makes probably the best driver out there, in my opinion, of course. They are so easy to hit and their sounds are unique and awesome.

I'm looking into the S2 Driver (or Ping G15) now and will definitely get one of them within the next month. I'm just going through some reviews.

Thanks for posting this, it certainly will effect my decision.

No problem. I'm sure a lot of modern drivers out there are good, but I play cobra irons so and I hit the S1 driver and loved it. And at a good price. I haven't hit the G15 but I was tempted too. But figured I didn't want to since I didn't want to spend that much. Good luck with your club choice. If you can afford it, might as well find an aftermarket shaft dealer, get fit, and make it a driver you'll really love. One of these days I will get fit with a Diamana shaft, but I'll probably wait and have it put in a 2011 driver.

Well distance doesn't lie and the misses were better. I just hope it continues.

It's not any new driver, it's a MAJOR upgrade. Unless by new you meant modern day not just anytime you switch drivers.

I just bought a used Nike Sumo 5000 off ebay to replace my nearly 20 year old TM. I really have no idea what to buy so I just picked up the cheapest modern driver I could find. Once I get some time with it I will get an idea of what I need. I hope to have similar results as you!

I have an old R5, I average 250+ on my drives with a 5-6 year old driver... So you're saying I should upgrade? (I've been looking to upgrade but my driver is pretty good so I would need a good reason to get a modern one..)

That Airmax 440 was/is 1 hot head in itself! Never saw any type of gain with Cobra heads myself.

I went from a Mizuno that was a few years old to my Titleist D2. I didn't even really want a new driver and just wanted to hit a few newer drivers on the launch monitor for the hell of it. When I averaged 17 yards longer with the Titleist, I couldn't pass it up. Good choice. My cousin just got an older Cobra. They are one of the most forgiving drivers out there with a huge sweet spot. I am going to hit his this week.

This driver looks like a piece of poop next to any 2009/2010 model driver. You have to hit the thing just perfect.

    • Day 297 6-28 Got some swings in early this morning, busy day. Worked on low point control, skills work.
    • Day 2: played 18. Driving was decent to good. Approach play was meh. Short game meh, and putting solid. Added up to an 81. Needed more tap in pars and more birdie chances.
    • Day 8 (28 Jun 26) - Worked with face position at address and overall setup - open/neutral/closed - and setting up for resulting shot shapes - using 8i and hard foam balls.  It was abbreviated as the thunder began to rumble. Got in about 20 swings before calling it.
    • Tale of two swings.  Swing 1: Slightly outside takeaway (hands move outside of target line) only to allow trail elbow over collapsing at P4. Doesn't take much to overdo it for the trail elbow collapse to only further exaggerate. That's death. Swing 2: Hands stay slight in at takeaway for a much better trail elbow condition at P4. This is a hard sell from an instinct perspective. More focus on un-weighting and re-weighting of lead foot to unlock a bit more mobility of hips and torso. A major flaw that creeps up often is me swinging flat footed and becoming overly armsy-collapsy as a result. Got reminded of this the hard way during my 2nd round match for club net championship. Was cruising along 2up until I made the turn. Then lost the swing for next five holes. Andy was playing good enough to capitalize. By the time I regained my swing on 16th, it was too late. Even Andy was like "That was a gift". Obviously that stings because have played well enough lately. Should have closed him out of the game comfortably with a few holes to spare. Shoulda woulda coulda. Tough lesson. Damn. P.S. I know the swings look very similar but trust me there is a difference.
