Top amateurs use whatever they like, but Titleist certainly reigns supreme. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they are just ubiquitous. I get really good deals on their balls, for example, and I got great deals on my clubs. I think if I didn't get a good deal on balls, I may play a Srixon balls, or maybe Callaway. Who knows. But realistically, all the brands are pretty much the same in the end.

The ball I play depends on the course. I rarely play a Titleist ball since they're so popular nobody believes it's yours when it's in the rough pin high - play a Wilson Staff or Srixon Tour ball and people believe you - much less likely it's someone elses. Weird huh? At the course I just played on Monday, I'll never use a Callaway. I found 8 balls and 6 of them were Callaways.

You are the first person in 30 years i have come across that changes balls depending on course - strange thing to do.

With regards to clubs I would say Mizuno irons seem to be the preference of a lot of players i know with Titleist woods, i have always played what manufacturer makes left handed, as you can see from my signiture Callaway is my preference and the "is" ball is a fine addition and the first time in donkeys years i have not played titleist balls. Finally if the people you are playing with dont belive you when you find your ball in the rough then maybe they are the wrong people to play with :)

Certainly I see a lot of Titleist and Mizuno clubs in low handicap bags. I believe part of that is that they have a lot of sposored presence in college golf. For this reason you see more Ping and calloway in low handicap women. I do believe that using brands that have their trust is a higher priority possibly, clubs are probably less likely to help them, and clubs that they lack comfort with might hurt more than any small performance changes. Tom Wischon? In search of the perfect club? states that in his books and articles that pros clubs are often so customized as to be significantly different from off the rack clubs.

I have been known to use a green sharpie - maybe it looks too much like a grass stain.

Just played a national amateur, this is what i saw (in order of popularity):

Driver: Taylormade, Titleist, Callaway, various (Ping, Nakashima, Cleveland)
Irons: Titleist (all forged) by a very long margin, Taylormade TP models, various including Mizuno, Callaway (x tour and prototype), Ping and the odd smaller brand
Wedges: Vokey, Cleveland, Forteen
Putters: Various Odyssey models, Scottie Cameron, Ping and the odd Taylormade mallet style
Balls: Titleist - again by a long margin. Srixon, Calloway, Bridgestone. Didn't come across anyone playing the Penta. Thankfully all were white.
