Saw some old highlights of players hitting their ball out of a water hazard (like a lake or stream). Is taking a drop really that big of a deal? In almost all cases, the player either whiffed, hit it out only to see it roll back in the water, or some other bad result.

villegas hit the green from a lake before.
A friend of mine hit the green from 50 yards out from a water hazard.

If the ball is only half/3 quarter submerged why not?

I have played a ball 3 times out of the water. The first time I almost went swimming after I swung, and the ball was never found. The second time I was rushed because there was a gator in the pond. I got it out, but not very far. The third I was on a long par 5 and the tip of the ball was above the surface. I went for it in 2 and came up 3 ft short. So I took a hard swing and got it about 25 ft out of the water towards the green leaving me a 30 yard up and down for par. If I had decided to take the drop, I would have had to go all the way back around the lake and have to get up and down from 215 yards.

Dude I was born and raised in Florida.....Ive got a photo album of gators we have caught with fishing poles. Bring em up in the boat, snap a picture and toss em back. I dont mess with anything over 5ft tho lol. More than likely the gators are going to run away from you, but you never know.

ok lol.

I have a image in my head of you trying to take your shot next to a 20 foot gator. I guess it was only a little one?

Like any recovery shot, it's risk reward. It also depends on where the ball is, or rather, where the drop would be.

You would be surprised how big a 20ft gator is. lol I have seen a 15ft in my neighbors pool....crazy huge. The norm is anywhere from 5-13ft. a 5 footer might take off your arm if your not careful, but a 13 footer could be the end of you.

The one I rushed was out in the middle of the lake, so really I didn't have to rush, but these guys are very fast in the water, and once their head goes under, you never know where they are going to pop up, so I was just being careful.

This guy was "only" 12ft and he killed someone. http://www.clickorlando.com/slidesho...s;p=news;w=400

This is ALL about where the drop will be vs where the shot out of the water is relative to the green. It's a Lateral Hazard...

That said, am I correct that even if you don't advance the ball out of the hazard after your "water shot," that an unplayable lie can be taken and your drop is two clublengths from that spot?

No, you cannot take an unplayable lie from a water hazard.

The only reason to play a ball from a hazard is if you believe you can do better with one stroke out of the hazard than you can with a drop and a penalty stroke. If it's a long hazard (not lateral) and you just roll in to the green side of it, this is quite possible. If you're in a situation where you've got to get down in 2 to win, you might decide it's better to try to whack out and pray to land on the green to have a putt rather than drop and have to hope for a hole-out. I'd think, especially for an amateur, it'd be pretty rare for playing out of actual water to be the smart play though.

The one with the hazard stake make me wonder about the free drop from a dangerous lie rule, or is that also not allowed in a hazard. Don't know that I want to be hitting within 20 feet of that water.

Nice pictures, I was golfing in Cancun once and went to walk up to the bunker that my ball was in..and a crocodile was lying down right next to my ball. I played it safe and dropped a ball. I played any ball that was close to the water very quickly for the rest of the day lol.

Every time I think about someone playing a ball from a water hazard, I think of Van De Veld rolling up his pants and standing next to his ball fully submerged in the Burns thinking about whether he could hit it or not.

I'm not the type who give up strokes easily. As long as I think I can play the shot, I will. I've broken a few clubs because I was so stubborn and played shots I shouldn't have. It's part of the fun, I guess.

Well, I've never tried to play the ball when it's in the water or anything because I haven't had the chance yet. My balls usually ended up way to deep to play.

Is there a local rule where if your ball goes near a gator but not in a hazard you can re-play your shot or something?

I'm not going to take my shot with one of them next to me.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
