Hello Sand Trap Community,
I'm new here figured I would get some other peoples advice on this issue. Currently I'm deployed and when I left I was a 2.1 handicap. I'll be gone for half a year about and during that time swing gets a bit rusty. I'll only be stateside for a few months then and during that time I want to get my first set of all custom clubs. I was looking at getting a split set 2-5 of the CB's and the rest MB's. Does that type of slit sound well. Also, next question would being rusty from not playing in a while be a bad time to get custom fit for clubs. Thanks for any help

Hello Sand Trap Community,

It obviously not ideal to get fit for clubs if your swing is rusty or in early season form. As a 2.1, it's likely that your length and static lie measurements wont change, but your swing plane and dynamic lie measurements might vary from your prime-season swings. With that said, a few months should be reasonable to get things going enough for a decent fit.

Have you hit both the 710 CB and MB? I'd at least consider a AP2/CB or AP2/MB set for 3-5/6 iron. Hit them all to see what feels the best. For what it's worth, I think the mp68/62 has a bit nicer feel than the 710 MB/CB if you wanted to go that route too.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have not hit the new Mizunos. I'm moving from my old MP-33 set that I did love but bought in 04 and are worn out a good bit. I will finally be able to afford driver, frw wood, and a set of irons all custom fit. And the reason for the two month time frame of being back is a move to Japan coming up. I'd like to work with my local pro shop before leaving and support them in my purchase. Not sure how long a full custom set like that takes to get ordered. I have read about the AP2 combo but some have said they just didn't like the lack of workability and just a completly different looking head than the cb/mb model.

Hello Sand Trap Community,

If "deployed" means militarily, then thank you for your service.

I wouldn't suggest getting fitted as your first stop when you get back to the states; hit the range a few times -- try for 3 times a week for two weeks first, to get some of the swing back. Then go ahead and get fitted. The combination you're looking at will work just fine. If you're set on Titleist, though, you'd be mistaken to not at least consider the AP2s. And since I see you have Mizunos already, you may want to consider their new sets, too. I think they start demoing their next year's sets in a few weeks.

the CB's are MONEY....... M O N E Y!!!!!!
if it were me (personal preference here)

3-6 CB
7-PW MB

I dont think the AP's will blend right w the MB's (thicker topline, sole etc..)
MAYBE an AP 3i, but i see you want a 2i as well, which tells me you SHOULD be a decent ball striker

let us know how u make out

A CB/MB combo sounds very appealing.

I play the AP2s and don't notice this lack of workability. However, as my first set of players irons, I can't compare them to blades or cavity back irons like the MB or the CB.

As others have suggested, I'd take a couple of weeks to get your swing back on track. That should leave you with about 5 weeks (take one week as a cushion for the order) to get fit for the clubs and have the pro shop order what you want. 2-5 iron CB and 6-9 (or PW) sounds like a great set.

im all for simple irons now. Dont really care for the tungsten welded on and plastic rubber glued in etc.

Well if I was a good enough ball sticker to game the CBs or the MBs I'd be playing those. But now that the summer is over and I can only practice a couple of hours a week at most, the more forgiving player's clubs Titleist has to offer is a better option for me. Plus, I love the way these irons look. (Even though the MBs or CBs look much better).

oh definitly, the ap2's are great irons. Much much better than most irons on the market. Just making a general statement though about what I prefer

Thanks for all the help and comments. I definetly will take a good solid month to get my swing back, I will get 3 weeks off when I get back so I do intend on playing a good bit and hitting a bunch of balls. I really hate everyone throwing the Mizuno idea in my face of the 68's. I loved my 33's but always loved the cleaner lines of the Titleist. I've heard the clankyness of the titleist blades have been notched down a good bit. But trust me I have definetly looked at the 68's a good bit. Just trying to remember though I don't believe my pro shop back home has the 68's in stock so I won't be able to hit them. And I cannot afford to get two sets made for me and to choose the best wish I could but I can't since I'm getting a driver and wood made as well.

For what it's worth, we weren't trying to throw it in your face. I was told before getting my current Mizunos that people rarely switch brands. Of course, I'm contemplating switching from Mizuno irons before too long, so you never know.

Have you hit the AP2s? Be honest... I'd gladly trade my "simple" sticks for them.

I went from the 735.CMs to the 710MB 3-P and I have to say they are just as easy to hit as the 735.CMs were (if you can consider them easy to hit). I have a 710CB 2 iron and I hate it with a passion. You can see the cavity at address and it doesn't mesh well going from the CB 2 iron to MB 3 iron. I haven't played the CBs from 3 down so all bets are off.

In my opinion the 3-5 MBs are a really easy blade to hit so you might want to go full MBs. I am really glad I didn't go with a split set.

Just my thoughts.
