I've always found it hard to hit a straight chip shot with backspin and usually put some sidespin on each chip. Usually left to right for a shot I need to keep higher, then right to left for a runner. I was wondering what others do and if there is indeed a correct way to play a chip shot with straight spin. Play the same shot always?

I've chipped with the following ways: I will use the toe up and face closed the most often when I am chipping and then my next favorite is square to square.

backswing position and after impact position
1) square to square
2) toe up shaft parallal and close face
3) toe up shaft parallal and face square
4) open face and face left open
5) face slightly closed and slightly closed after impact

This week when I practice distances of 10, 20, 30 & 40 yards. the ball that I chipped onto the green I blade back with my 56 degree wedge with 11 bounce, so if I chip with 30 balls, I can then practice blading back 30 balls. I found that this is helpful with shots just off the green where I can blade the shot and judge the distance.

If I am chipping, its always pretty basic..I see no reason to really complicate it. Pitches(anything where you must fly an area of rough, a bunker, or 10 yards away is a pitch to me) are different and I play them with an open face or a square face depending on flight needed. If the whole way to the hole is "safe" I will keep it as low as possible to land where I need to and roll out. if I have trouble, open the face a little and let it fly high.

I usually chip the same way as you do. Ones that I give some air rolls out to the right and the ones that run roll out to the left.

Square stance and square clubface, no sidespin, easy.
