I just got a Titleist 735 2-iron really cheap off Ebay. I already have a 21 degree hybrid and a 5-wood. But, I hit my 3-iron so well in this set, I thought I'd give the 2-iron a shot since it was so cheap. I could see myself potentially using it off the tee on tight fairways or if I need to keep the ball low. I think the hybrid will win out and be in my bag most or all of the time. But, I wondered if anyone else has played or continues to play a 2-iron.

I traded in the 2 iron for an 19* hybrid at the beginning of the summer. Best move I ever made. The 2 iron was pretty much just used off the tee and I am able to use the hybrid both off the tee and out of all different types of lies. My hybrid is way more versatile and easy to hit than the 2 iron was. Even at the professional level look for the 2 iron to go the way of the buffalo and be replaced by the hybrid.

By the way your 21* hybrid usually takes the place of a 3 iron with the 18* or 19* hybrid replacing the two iron. The 5 wood, 2 iron and 19* hybrids usually go about the same distances. You may want to check the distances on your clubs before you decide what configuration you go with, it sound to me like you would have an overlap if you carried both a 3 iron and 21* hybrid or a 2 iron and 5 wood.

I used to sport a 2 iron back in the days before hybrids, and then I traded that in for a driving iron. The original mizuno fli-hi driving iron (18 degree) was awesome 230 down the middle all day every day. But like the previous poster that got upgraded to the titleist 503 (22 degree) which can be from anywhere.
However, I think that I want my 4 iron play to get better so I am going to practice with my 2 iron again. I've always believed that if you practice and can hit a lower iron, your scoring clubs just come naturally.

2 iron to practice, and hybrid to play.

Thanks for the perspective. I know what you mean about my 21 degree hybrid, 3-iron, 5-wood dilemna. I'm still unsettled about this. I originally thought I'd do a 19 degree hybrid and a 15 degree 3 wood. Turns out my 3-iron is a 22 degree loft and I get about 195-200 in the air. My 21 degree hybrid has a graphite shaft so I get it about 210-215 in the air. I get my 5-wood about 225 in the air. My concern is the 19 degree hybrid would go 220 even if I swung 90%, which leaves a gap of about 20 yards from 200-220, which are are often important yardages. I got the 2-iron mainly for fun, but I thought maybe it could replace my 5-wood or hybrid and I could pack a 3-wood. It's hard to give up my 5-wood because I've been hitting it so well lately (from the fairway and the rough). I don't hit the hybrid as well, but I agree it's so much more versatile than an iron, especially out of the rough. They should change the rule to 15 clubs.

Thanks man. This is kind of what I had in mine. I agree longer irons are the key to practice. Sometimes, I'll only take my 3,4,5 to the range, no other clubs. I'm curious now about that 503 club. Maybe their cheap now on Ebay too.

. It's so good that I even took out my 3 iron, because my 3 and 4 iron off the deck are very similar in distance. I hit my 4 iron about 200 yards and the hybrid goes about 215, but that's as far of a long game that I have until you get to my driver. To me beyond 230 is very inconsistent to attack a green unless you are a pro, I don't see anybody getting on the green with that much consistency like 250 out. Don’t get me wrong I have a couple of buddies that have done it and were putting for eagle, but most of the time they end up over the green or behind a tree (even OB). So for me going from thinking about Eagle to Saving PAR with just one swing is retarded. I’d just rather lay up it up to 100 and throw a dart to have a 10 foot birdie putt. I’ll play a 19 degree hybrid keep my game more realistic > 230 yards, and use that extra club for a gap wedge. I mean am I wrong in thinking that 3 wood is not needed if you are able to hit the big dog?

I just got back from the range today. Man I like this 2-iron. I hit it the same distance as my 5-wood. I need to look into a 3 wood now. The only bugger is that my 5-wood plays so great out of the rough. I wonder if 3 less degrees of loft in the 3-wood will make it harder to hit out of the rough. But, I'm definitely keeping my 2-iron in the bag. My 21 degree hybrid and 5-wood are no longer needed.

how do you like your 503 out of the rough? i like my rescue dual out of the rough, but for accuracy, i find my long irons easier...(when i'm hitting the irons well at least).

I've never hit it out of anything super deep, but if I can see 1/4 of the ball i've been able to muscle it out. Although I probably agree with Iacas, the 503 really isn't meant to be hit out ot the rough. It really shines off the tee on tight driving hole and long par 3. That's why I got the 22 degree 503 (not to mention it dirt cheap now) so that I could get a 19 degree rescue.

i think, like the one iron (butter knife) of yore was replaced with fairway woods, the deuce is being replaced with fairway woods and now primarily with hybrids. if you think about it, the hybrid has a level of versatility that the ole deuce just can't compete with. i don't have a hybrid in the bag yet, but that will be changing.

I wish it were that easy for me. I just found that the two iron gives me better accuracy and more controllable trajectory, probably better spin too. The hybrids get up a little to high for me and I'm not consistent enough with playing a hybrid like a 7-iron to control the trajectory. I just don't get the feel or responsiveness from a hybrid like I do an iron. For me, the only advantage of the hybrid over the 2-iron is out of the rough.

I would suggest then that you simply haven't found the right hybrid. I gave up my 2-iron because it wasn't very good out of the rough. The Rescue Dual TP I had for awhile went too high. The 585.H is brilliant in a lot of situations and really lets me control height and shape from a variety of lies.

I agree the 585H is a nice club. Perhaps, I should have tried the 17 degree version like you have. The 19 degree hit the ball too high for my liking. Also, I don't think I really spent enough time trying to work the hybrid to shape shots and so on. I have been going through some swing changes recently so that didn't help.

I just got back from GolfGalaxy and I demoed several different 3-woods and none of them hit further than my 18 degree 5-wood. Maybe the machine is off, but I carried the 5-wood and 3-wood both about 230 and the additional roll with the 3-wood was not much. I also think my 5-wood may potentially be 10-15 yards longer than my 2-iron. So, my feeling now is to keep both the 2I and 5W and not get a 3W. That way I can hit an easy 5W out of the rough and can have the option to play the 2I off the tee or fairway. Does an 18 degree loft seem low for a 5W? Maybe, I could call it a 4-wood to psyche myself out?

I have 4 2 irons, MP 29, MP 37, MP 62, and Taylor Made 300 series forged, all with x100 "tour" shafts. EQ- Project X7.0, problem is, I only hit them all about 235, so unless it's windy or a links golf course (never is) then I opt my hybrid.

I say go for it, I play a 2 iron or a hybrid. I personally love the 2 iron but depending on the course set up i'll switch to my hybrid, but if you hit your 3 iron well the chances of you hitting your 2 iron well is pretty good. Its all preference

  • 2 weeks later...
i buy a lot of sets of irons and only buy them with a 2 iron included, great way to save a few bucks. I also like playing a 2 especially on long par 5s for a second shot and since I play the tips usually, I need it for a 220 plus par 3.

I also think once you start thinking about a hybrid being an easier club to hit and then you hit a yank or a slice.. then your head is really messed up.

IMO, You have to have the mind set that all your clubs are easy to hit and then execute your shot.

A deuce is also nice on driving holes when you must hit it straight.

Yes I have a set of 735.cms and I do play my 2-iron. Love it infact. But then again I am not a fan of the hybrids. I love the true 2-iron.

Its a wonderful club people are just afraid of it I guess.
