I was thinking of picking up a box of refinished prov1x's for my round this week. My question is are they as bad as everyone says? Not prov's but refinished golf balls, I know they probably won't feel and act like a brand new ball but must be similar right, I've read some bad things and was just looking to get your input, have you ever played with them what's your take? Thanks in advance

I have never played refinished golf balls, but I too have read some less than flattering things about them. On the other hand I rarely ever see anything negative about recycled AAAA or AAAAA balls.

There are tons of threads here to peruse regarding used/cheaper balls.

I grabbed a 60 pack of used dunlops at walmart this year for like 17-20$ I think. Was worth it ive only not used like 1-2 and still have tons of em.

No complaints. Anyways doesnt ball not even really matter until you get to like a 10hcp?

Haven't tried refinished myself, but would rather recommend recycled, grade AAA or better.

That's what I think, too.

I don't think a ball really matters that much for golfers with our skill level. I used to play ProV1 (and V1x) and Dunlop DDH balls just because my father had dozens of boxes of them. Now I play logo overruns and recycled balls. Dan

I bought a few dozen refinished ProV1's on an auction...really cheap price. I shared a few sleeves with my regular golf group (2 - 5 HCP) - they thought that they played like a new ball (but the stigma of refinished was still there). So, I didn't have any issues with this one purchase. Moving forward, I'd probably stick with Mint used (4A / 5A) because they can usually be had cheaper.

If you have the choice between refurbished and used go with the used ones, because that way they haven't been altered with inferior coating or anything though I have played both and have had no problems besides the ones you always get with softer balls.Besides for $1.50-$2.25 per ball compared to $4.00 plus you'll get more moneys worth.

That's what I think, too.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

The type of ball matters greatly within 100 yards. If you have a higher handicap, I guarantee the way to pickup 5 strokes fast, is 100 yards and in. Going to be tough to develop 100 yard and in feel using pinnacles, for example. Not that it can't be done, but, I read somewhere that golf is the most difficult sport on the planet. Why make it harder than it has to be?

I'd read that most refinished balls are poor condition or bottom of lake balls that require refinishing for appearance but likely have issues beyond appearance.

Bought a dozen of slightly used Titleist at a Golf Course. I say they are slightly used because that must be the balls which golfers shot into the water hazards and retaken by the Golf course attendant.

I don't see how they differ in performance compared to a new ball.

i bought refinished balls 3 times. twice, they were pretty much brand new, but the 3rd batch was absolute crap.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

It's a double-edged sword, though. Soft, spinny balls which are great for short game control also accentuate hooks/slices.

Go with recycled over refinished. Normally refinished balls are balls that are completely beat up and they have a new coating and paint applied to make them appear new. However, because of this there is no way to actually tell the condition of the ball. Recycled balls on the other hand are just used balls. Check out GolfBallNut.com for a great selection of balls at really good prices. I think you can get 1 dz. Pentas for $21 in mint condition; hard to pass that up. The rest of the premium balls are right around this price point as well.

Personally, I picked up 2 dz. Srixon Soft Feels in near mint condition for $6/dz. for short game practice and they were in great condition. I'd say 18 of the 24 were pretty much brand new and ALL of them were playable.

Only experience I've had with them is very negative. Whatever finish it is that they put on me quickly started flaking off...definitely not something I want to deal with. Go with "recycled", same price and you don't have the funky finish.
