Really Im not worried about retail, since I'll be ordering them through my club pro with the shaft/grip specs from the factory with a 10% upcharge over cost. Im pretty happy about that, but I have to find the right set to order.

I have to vote for the AP-2.... but then I'm prejudiced because I've been playing them for 2 years and love mine.

Just out of curiosity, why are you playing graphite? Since you say that you have a strong swing, why not go with the DG shaft and save some money that way. You certainly don't need graphite for any added distance. I'm 63 and not a hard swinger, so I use the regular flex steel in mine. After using graphite for the last couple of sets I owned, I switched back to steel and I'm am very glad that I did. I just get much better feedback than I did with graphite. And the cost savings is significant. I bought mine through the pro shop at my golf course with my employee discount. Sounds like you get the same deal - cost plus 10%. I only bought the 5I-PW initially (January of 2009), then last month I added the GW to the set. The GW with DG R300 shaft was right at about $110, including shipping.

I would say CB, AP2 (though those two are very close, it's all personal preference), X Forged, and Split Cavity last. Nike is supposed to be coming out with a new combo set next month, so maybe wait around for those if you are a Nike fan. I personally think the Spilt Cavity feel very harsh, even more so than the Vr TW Blades.

if your looking for AP2's. The 710's can easily be had for 500 bucks off ebay, slightly used. When I looked a few months ago there were many people selling slightly hit 710 AP2 sets and they would sell for around 500 -550 final bid. Kinda kicked myself when I saw that, I paid like 900 for mine, lol

I bought my first real set of clubs from an older gentlemen. At the time, I was unaware about Steel vs Graphite, and thought graohite was "cooler" lol

I would go this route, but I want them fit to my specs.

yea me too. Im standard all around so its a little easier for me. What are your specs though? You can easily get clubs adjusted slightly especially forged. Even if you do buy forged irons, they will bend over time with use and you will have to get them bent back.

Why not the VR Splits? Im going to hit them next weekend, but just wondering.

They're good irons but I wouldn't rank them as high as the other ones you mentioned. In my case, I've only hit AP2s, X-Forged 09 and the Nike VR. Although the last two were hit after I purchased my 710 AP2s, I didn't like them as much as mine. I found both to be less forgiving than the AP2s and when I tried them I wasn't yet a pretty good ballstriker. I loved the feel of both and would have probably gone for the X-Forged if I hadn't tried the AP2s (or bought them for that matter).

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
