Posture / Setup: - Tips For A Straighter Back -

Hello everyone.


Still being a beginner golfer, I've learned that a straight back during the setup/swing is vital.
I'm having trouble achieving proper posture during the setup, e.a. : only by placing/feeling my hand on my lower back can I bend where it should pivot. Without this trick or any correction I will slump over the ball. Probably due to an accident several years ago, my back is not as trained as it should be and fatigues fast.

  • What muscles are needed to support a straight but leaning over back?
  • What exercises are helpfull to strenghen key muscles.
  • Any tips welcome on how to achieve a correct posture during setup as well as prolonging gametime until the muscles will start to ache / fatigue!

I would disagree it is critical. In fact, I'd prefer that you be far more relaxed, with almost rounded shoulders.

Furthermore, your back is not straight. It's an s-curve. Trying to make it straight makes no sense.

I’ll take the “exercises to strengthen key muscles” part of the question.

Try to incorporate the old-school compound-movement lifts into your workouts, for example, squats, dead lifts, and stiff legged dead lifts.

I perform a lot of “hanging power cleans” as part of my golf specific workout. In my limited estimation, this is the most useful lift for golfers. This lift will allow you to work on balance, speed, strength, and flexibility – all in one lift.

Seek out the advice of a qualified trainer to show you how to perform these movements – and it is worth noting that these movements require a straight back… the same kind of straight back that you would want to adopt while addressing the ball in your stance (N.B. the pelvic tilt differs from lift to lift, and from the actual address position in golf).

Arnie is a great example. Head hanging, chin tucked, upper back rounded. Very hard to turn the shoulders perpendicular to the spine when the back is straight and the chin is up in the air. Attachment 2476

I want to achieve a straighter back, not a straight spine.

@mvmac: Thank you for your reply. I'd be happy to have his posture, as his lower back is nice and straight. I mostly bend at the point shown by the arrow, causing back pain and messing up my swing. For this I seek a remedy.

Could you take a picture or video of your setup/swing so we can look at it? I would think anyone without some sort of bad back issues are able to get into a good golf swing posture.
