My favorite is a topped shot that rolls 200 yards down the fairway without a foot of carry...

My friend has no concept of choosing the right club for certain distances. Sometimes our balls are <2 yards from each other fairway and I'll be hitting an open-faced 56*, and then watch him whip out a 5 iron and swing his heart out.

Anyway we were on a 161-yard par 3. I hit a 7-Iron and leave it a tad short of the pin. He tees up and begins practice swinging and I ask him what hes hitting. He replies with "Sand Wedge, dude." I said "You really think you are going to carry a sand wedge 160 yards?" he says "Of course, dude."

So he swings the club, and blades it. I watched the ball dribble its way up the fairway, onto the green, and roll up 2ft from the pin. All he says is "I told you I could carry a sand wedge 160 yards."

He makes a birdie and I two-putt a par. He a 36 handi and I'm a 12. FML.

How about blading an 80-yard wedge into an elevated push-up green, which given an option of burying into the face of a greenside bunker or flying 20 yards over the green, caroms off the lip of the bunker and settles 20 feet from the hole?

My brother had a good one on a 205 yard uphill par 3. He hadn't established handicap at the time, so his game was variable. Hits the tee shot, 20-30 yards short of the green. He's still pretty low, chipping uphill to an elevated green which then slopes away. He blades it, the ball rolls at high speed towards the green. Bumps the flag dead on the middle and in the hole for a 2.

One of the lessons I taught my son when he was learning to play was not to say anything about a swing or shot until the ball stops rolling. You never know where it will actually end up - no matter how bad you think you have hit it.

haha i guess that why they say "you cant draw pictures on the score card!" on paper it's just a number!

Keep it where the mowers go!

I love the freak bad shots - their entertainment value can add immensly to the joy of the game. A couple years ago playing casual skins with my brother-in-law, we came to the 17th, a short, narrow par 4 with water in front of the green. We had about 6 or 7 holes of skins carried over. I teed off with a 3 iron and pushed it way right heading OB, only to have it hit the OB stake and bounce back into the fairway. Whew, got away with that one! Then I stepped up and skulled a SW, rocketing it over the green about 3 feet off the ground heading OB behind the green. But then we watched it hit a curb on the cart path and bounce straight backwards, landing back on the green and settling about 12 feet from the hole. Made the birdie putt, pretty much winning all the skins. My brother-in-law still brings that hole up every time I see him, fuming just a wee bit.

What i call a strategic lay-up, taking a 3-wood and topping it 130-140 yards down the fairway. Ending up with a perfect wedge distance.

Guilty

I think we all have done it. i hit a bad drive on 18 in the semis of my club championship, I was one up at the time. I needed to hit a low cut to around a tree, 190 uphill. I would have been thrilled to get into the greenside bunker. I did hit the low cut...damn near a blade, it never got more then 4 feet of the ground but it did have the proper ball flight. when it stopped rolling, right up the gut between the bunkers, i had a simple 20' 2 putt waiting for me str8 up hill....to say the guy who was eliminated on it didn't find it quite as impressive as i did would be fair! LOL crazy game.

    • Would You Rather #67: Would you rather play a golf course in which every hole is a par-3. You never get to tee off with anything longer than your 6 iron? or  Would you rather play a golf course in which every hole is a long par-5 where it is outside your range to ever reach the green in two?
    • Pretty good video on how the trail elbow never really gets in front of the body until post impact.  The only nip pick is that they say the trail elbow doesn’t get in front of the trail hip. I am glad they put in their own reference for their definition, that shaded box. If you define the position of the points based on a XYZ reference. I think it was the 2nd example where the trail elbow went ahead of the trail hip when considering actual coordinates, got close to the target. It still doesn’t get in front of the body. The box they defined. Anyways, good evidence to show the hands have to get down and not out. The elbow gets more attached to the right side than trying to pull it around the body.
