I'd say either I'm "almost scratch" (just being held back by the blades) or your friends are exaggerating.

Ok. just making sure im getting this right

So if say a blade iron or AP2 or whatever forged players iron is struck like a Centimeter out towards the toe, you wont lose like 20 yards? Clearly im not as educated as i should be on this topic.

You might, but I seriously doubt it. A smidgen of lag and a descending blow keep the club head moving in the right direction. The same shots that make your R7 twist in your hand would make a Mizuno MP-33 twist. There are a lot more factors than MB versus CB when it comes to the right iron for a decent player. Some players CBs are actually harder to hit than some blades. Basically, don't discount either one until you hit some balls. You don't have to be Rory McIlroy or Rickie Fowler to hit a blade.

Alright thanks!

Also, will i lose any distance with a forged iron? For example, i hit a 6 iron 170. Would i hit the AP2 160--165 ish b/cuz of the loss of loft? An R7 6iron is like 29* but an AP2 is 31* If i would lose the distance, could you just bend the forged clubs 1 or 2 degrees stronger or would that mess up bounce and lie angles?

Alright thanks!

I couldn't help you with the distance thing. I play at altitude (~ 2800 feet) and a stock 6 iron is anywhere from 170 to 195 yard club depending on which set I have in the bag - all forged, all blades.

You can always check out the Titleist 735.cm's. They are really a remarkable club in many regards but the best thing is they give you forgiving long and mid irons while going straight blade on the 8-PW. It is a very nicely blended set and you will be hard pressed to find anyone with a negative opinion on these sticks. Plus, you can scoop up a set for cheap since they were released a couple years ago. I know I will never sell my 735's and I still use the 2-4 iron when I feel swing sloppy.

There is a set on the marketplace for cheap...these are solid performers and have the blade to cavity progression. IMO, these are great for a low-mid single capper.

Any news on the ap 2's?? I'm stuck between them and MP 53's... Outside shot at the 63's but not sure I"m good enough.

Take a look at the Mizuno MP-58 irons. You'll be pleasantly surprised with the feel, distance and forgiveness of the MP58s...the top-line is thin at address. Has everything you're looking for. Here's a review on them: http://thesandtrap.com/?s=mp58.est

You may want to go to your local course when they have their demo club day and try them out.

Good luck.

Alright folks i made the decisiion.
Tested the Ping S56, Ping i15, Titleist AP2, Taylormade R9 TP, Mizuno MP 58, Callaway X Forged, and Adams CB1

Initial testing, i wanted to narrow it down slowly
Ping's both felt great. Titleist and Mizuno probably had the best feel and Taylormade was best forgiveness. However, the MP 58 felt great, but for some reason, they were short for me. this was the same case for the Callaways. Adams just didnt feel right, which is too bad considering they where EASILY the best looking

So i had the S56, i15, AP2, and RP TP
R9 TP were good, but didnt have the feel or feedback that i was hoping for, so i had it down to 3
Then i got rid of the S56. Took too much of a digger swing to get them in the air for me. However, the feel was awesome, but it just took too much to get them airborne

Down to 2, the i15 and AP2
Both of these iron sets were fantastic for me. The AP2 were great feeling and gave great feedback, while the i15 were superb on feedback as well as super consistent on distance.
Basically, i was sold on both of these sets. However, as you may have seen in the signature, i went with the PINGS. Really i could have gone either way. What sold me on the Pings was the shaft combos. The stock shaft for the Pings was 10x better for me than the DG s300. I was getting excellent feedback and 10 yards more. 7 irons were going 170 consistently as opposed to the AP2 of 160-165. So i went with the Pings and couldn't be happier

Thanks for all the help in leading me in the right direction guys.

You were probably getting 10 yards more because of the stronger loft on the I15's.

7 Iron Lofts:
Ping I15: 33*
Titleist AP2: 35*

I hope that you took into account how the two irons felt side-by-side. You shouldn't go off of pure distance, as lofts can be corrupt. I hope that you are enjoying your I15's and that they provide confidence and great shots. Best of luck man.

I did look at both side by side
I guess i get why everyone would want a forged iron. but to be completely honest, i felt no difference in feel between the i15 and S56s vs the AP2s. People say forged feels better, well im not so sure about that after this. Some will definitely argue against this im sure. If i had a no idea what club i was hitting and they were both similar models, one forged, one not, im pretty sure i couldnt tell the difference at all...

The AP2 were a little more muted off the face than the Pings, but the i15 still felt great. In my opinion, the Ping's were the best performers, and that is why i chose them

If you're not averse to second hand clubs I'd definitely consider the Mizuno MP-57s which are a "players cavity back" (now replaced by the MP-58 range) as you can get some cracking deals second hand.

And as for people telling you you can't hit blades unless you hit them perfectly, don't believe it. Buy yourself a second hand 6 iron and give it a whirl! e.g: http://cgi.ebay.com/Mizuno-MP-67-Sin...item230a687c08

He already made his choice from the eclectic mix he listed (never understood how someone's choice comes down to a G series PING or a 710 Titleist - whatever).

I hit the I15 irons during a lie fitting and I thought they were great irons. There are just so many better choices out there though, but I dont think you are going to go wrong if you buy a set of them. They are nice

    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.

    • Day 32 (12 Dec 25) - What was the Friday shootout became a practice round due to lack of enough players (temps kept a lot of the regulars home).  Used it to dial in some playing distances as I played back a set of tees to force alternate club selections.  Plenty of long approaches - every club was put into action thru the course is 18 holes. Was not a GiR day but rather nGIR (5 up and down pars).  Pin placement was tough - the smallest miss would see the ball roll just as far past or even off the green.  Was a great day of battling what the course was dealing. Overall - I finished 5 strokes over my average score of 86.
