Cost of trip play St andrews

I would like to start saving money to spend a week playing golf especially at St. Andrews. Do I need to save 5 or 10 or 15 thousand for the whole trip. Everyone I have asked has been reluctant to say anything.

I am actually in the process of planning a trip to St. Andrews. I haven't booked flights yet but we have booked our hotel and we found a B&B; literally across the street from the 18th hole. It's only costing us 75 GBP per night. Depending on where you want to play I would start with 5K and you will have a great time!

I am going to St. Andrews at the end of April and for 4 nights at the Fairmont St. Andrews Hotel and 4 rounds of golf (Torrance, Kingsbarns, New Course and Old Course) and a rental car, it is $2,500 and you make it in 3 payments before you go. Last week we actually received our tee times for every round we are playing. The day we play the New Course we are playing at 8am and then I booked Carnoustie (about at 50 minute drive from St. Andrews) online myself at 2:30 that afternoon, its was around $225.00 for the Championship Course.

Also go through British Airways for the cheapest airfare, from New York to Edinburgh with a short change in London was $830.00

I cannot wait for this trip! 75 days until I leave!

Seeing as how the original two trips were 1.5 years ago by now, do the first two posters care to update us on the total cash spent for the lodging, golf and travel fair?

I haven't played golf in the UK, but from everything I've heard it's much cheaper to play championship courses in the UK than it is in the US.

What I found is it depends on the exchange rate. I've had it as bad as 2 USD and change for 1 pound. So everything is more expensive. The rate now is around 1.7 USD for a pound. Much better, but I think I remember it was at one point 1.5 or a bit lower in my lifetime when I was looking at going there.

While hotel/b&b;, car rental and green fees are pretty much the same or even lower than the US, everything else is more expensive. Food is expensive. Petrol... gas is really expensive if you plan to drive around, almost $10/gallon. I usually rent the smallest car I can bear, stick shift and diesel.

While private courses in the US are almost impossible to get on, the policies in the UK are much more relaxed. It's much easier to play on any of the BO rota courses than the those on the US Open rota. Much easier. Golf in the UK is more democratic than it is here.

my feeling on week-long trips out of the country, is that the average budget would be $10K.  but that also includes me taking my wife.   while it might actually be less, or end up being more, i always think "can i afford to spend $10K" when i think of trips like this.

It really depends on your standards.  Things like tickets will be in the 600-1000 (depending on where you are leaving from range)  but things like hotels can vary from ~100 a night to 400+. Same thing with food as the difference between eating at Chillis and Ruth Chris is the difference between a 60 dollar meal and a 200 dollar one.

This is interesting info.

I'd love to play St. Andrews, but I can't imagine scheduling a whole trip to do it.  I mean, the cost of this one trip would be equal if not more than most private club dues (around here) for a year.

Then again, if I had the money or if I ever take a work trip that way, I wouldn't pass it up.
