I did some research last time around and it turns out it's quite a common problem in rotational sports like golf, baseball, tennis etc. Bummer is that it's really hard not to keep aggravating the strain once you have it, even if you stop playing golf. Pick something up, ow. Roll over in bed, ow. Turn your head to back up in the car, ow. As a result, the ill effects tend to linger much longer than you'd expect for what feels like a pretty minor injury. On the other hand, it's quite possible there's something in my swing/physiology that makes me particularly prone to these. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I had the same strain somewhere around 1985 or so at the driving range......thought I was having a heart attack it hurt so bad. Here it is 2010 and it still pops up every once in awhile doing different things, not just golf, but no where near as intense as it was the first time. What helped me and I'm by no means an advocate of taking meds but 1 advil 30 minutes before playing and 1 after 9 seemed to help keep the muscles relaxed. Now that I'm 53, I'm feeling all kinds of injuries I had in the past.

Funny, but I'm guessing Eric is not a Dad yet. Just wait. You'll find yourself catching their puke to protect the furniture!!!

My daughter just turned 8.

Eric,

Sorry. So you have caught her puke then!

Stretch,

I also want to add using both heat and ice on the injured area. It's common just using ice, by cycling back and forth can speed up healing as well.

I ran into the exact same injury twice both times at the driving range after topping that 400 ball mark (not that I "topped" 400 balls but just hit over 400 balls ) I'm not sure if it matters but both times it occurred I was hitting on mats and never happened when hitting off grass. After the second time I took in a lot of whey protein while I was waiting for it to heal (two weeks). I did lite exercises to strengthen the muscle and stretches to help it become more flexible while it was healing. Also I would note any movement that hurt and once it was nearly healed I would do exercises and stretches that involved the same movements to help ensure it doesn't occur again.

Hopefully it won't happen again but it does help improve my chipping and putting game since that's all I can do while it's healing

I am a new player & have a really, no REALLY sore left shoulder. I'm trying desperately to keep my left elbow straight & my shoulder socket is REALLY killing me after every round time I play ... just seems so unnatural, but necessary from everything I've read & seen on youtube. I guess my question is how straight do you have to keep your left elbow - is a little bend acceptable ? Lessons will be in order next spring, but just wanted some consensus here beforehand ... thx

I have been hit by a few long term injuries in my other sports i play, but golf has been relatively good so far (sometimes get sore in the right hip).

THe best thing i did was purchase a foam roller

THese are amazing tools, and feel just like a massage/physio session if used correctly. Highly recommended for loosening up the bodys muscles and joints.

Was able to play nine holes this evening. First time out on the course in nearly a month.

Shot 41 playing a weak pull cut into the teeth of a stiff South Easter. Not ideal. On the other hand, only 13 putts, so maybe that enforced short game focus wasn't a total waste!
