i dunno if other courses put on these kinds of tournaments, but i played in one today where you play the course in reverse - they put temporary tee boxes in the vicinity of a green, and you play the hole backwards to the previous green. for example, a tee box next to the ninth green, and you play the hole backwards to the 8th green. it was actually a good bit of fun and a whole new perspective of the course, although there were a couple of instances where we faced some ridiculously tough shots, plus the course played probably about 500-700 yards longer. it was a four man scramble, and we got around in 69 strokes, which i knew wasn't going to come close to winning, but dang - we wound up second to last! winning score was 61, last place was 71 (there were only about a dozen teams, though).

anyway, it was pretty fun, though i definitely wouldn't want to play the course in reverse on a regular basis.

I've heard that St. Andrews was meant to be played backwards, and they do so once a year. It sounds fun, though I can think of a ton of courses where you wouldn't be able to play it backwards.

The club I belong to does this once a year. It's fun and difficult as it means getting to the green over some pretty tall trees and greens that slope front to back.

yes, we faced the exact same thing. i think all but maybe 4 or 5 greens sloped away, and all of the par 3 approaches had to be hit high to get to the green; two of those were totally blind, and the other two were mostly obscured.

Definitely couldnt do it at my home course, with the roads, houses and even a tunnel between greens and tees

Haven't played in anything like that, it sounds fun. The local muni here plays a "Red, white & blue" tourney every 4th of July. When you tee off on one, you hit from the red tees, hole#2 the whites & hole#3 the blues. You continue this through the entire round. It's alot of fun and really makes you hit different shots.
my get up and go musta got up and went..

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
