I got fitted for the current irons in my sig, 2.5 years ago when i took up golf. At the time i knew nothing like shaft specs, so i was pretty raw. Now after joining this site I have increased my knowledge of clubs substantially.

I seem to recall at the time i was given a club (6iron) to hit on the monitor. As far as i know i didnt hit clubs with different shafts, have the lies adjusted. The only major points i remember were hitting a club that allowed me to stand more upright, and not hunched over.

So i have been hitting a few irons of my mates to get an idea what i like, and i notice their clubs are a little shorter than mine. I went and measured and my 6 iron is 38 inches long. This is supposedly 1" over standard yeah?

The reason i ask is that I am only 6 feet tall and thought i would fall into a more standard type of length.

The other reason i ask is that I am eyeing off some R9 irons, went and demoed the standard version and love them.

Is it likely that my swing has changed/improved so much that I am now standard length with my swing?

That's 1/2" above "standard". The reason I say that is because that is what a standard Taylor Made 6 iron length is, I'm not sure. If they feel okay, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm fitted for standard length clubs but elect to trim 1/2" off them.

I should have known that there is no standard as they do all vary so much.
Ajs,
I guess that would explain why the Taylormade club felt so similar to my current irons.

Thats why I put it in quotations. I'd consider standard to be 38 for a 5 iron. Mizuno usually makes theirs a 1/4" inch shorter, Taylor made and some others make them 1/2" longer

each company has their own standard
when it comes to getting clubs fitted you need to go to reputable club fitter NOT THE BOX STORE
if you need to have your lie adjusted not all clubs will be able to be bent thats why most plp go with forged irons since they are adjustable for loft and lie

im 5 11 and my clubs are 1.5 over standard to put me in the correct aligenment of 40 degrees forward

Absolutely! If you buy cast clubs, some folks might elect not to adjust the lie angle. But not to worry, just find someone who will. I have never owned a forged club. All my clubs are adjusted 2 deg up, 1.25" over, etc.. Never had any trouble getting adjustments made. I only mention this in case goober #1 says you can't have the lie angle adjusted because you bought cast clubs. Some folks will tell you this in hopes of selling you new clubs. Some are just being honest and letting you know the risk, yet they will adjust them afterwards. -Dan

Most people don't like bending TaylorMades, they tend to snap like twigs.

Almost any iron can be bent at least 2 degrees, (lie), forged irons can usually be bent more, sometimes 3 degrees. It doesn't make sense to go more than that usually. I have known 2 golfers, one took a stronger lofted iron, weakened the loft and used a shaft length of a shorter iron with lie adjusted flat a greater degree, he was only about 5 foot one, a retired jockeyl. The second went the other way, placing a short iron head in a longer club length with the loft strengthened and a very upright lie, he was about 6-10. That degree of adjustment is over my head. I don't know how that affects other properties of the clubhead, especially on clubs with a wider sole or a lot of offset. Maybe someone else knows if this is a reasonable thing to do.

In reality there shouldnt be any difference between me getting fitted before i buy the clubs, and if i buy the clubs then get fitted yeah? THe same thing has to happen whether its at the shop i buy them, or another club fitter it really shouldnt matter?

Hey Binga7.. I see your in melbourne.. easily the best advice I can give is go and have a chat with Jon (or someone else!) from Total Golf Performance.... they are down just off Warrigul rd Oakleigh South....

I was recently fit for my whole bag and Jon was great... It cost me $50 for the fitting and $20 per iron to have the adjustments made.... They sell taylor made there too so if you bought clubs off them I'm sure it would be cheaper...
