Another flop for the cocky big mouth. Tied for first in 3rd round in Japan (where he thought the competition might be a bit easier, I guess) - finished T-19

Sergio may well be big headed and cocky, but at least his attitude is backed up by a terrific golf game as witnessed at the recent Ryder cup where won 4 out of 5 point for Europe. As I remember quite a few cocky egos got squashed at the K Club during September.

He performed well at Ryder Cup with the help of his partners. He was strong but, he didn't do it alone.

I've just developed a dislike for him since his cocky remarks and somehow I see justified in sniping back at him when he collapses (which seems normal). He was a great junior player and $1.5 million a year is nothinng to sneeze at. But, he isn't the star quality player the media wanted him to be when they were hoping for a TW rivalry.

The media have been trying to build up a number of guys in an attempt to create a rivalry with Woods. Sergio isn't in that league, but neither is anybody else. Woods stands alone, a giant amongst golfers.

I didn't see Sergio's comments as being cocky, but that's a different story for a different day I suppose. He was being truthful, and I never fault a guy for telling it like it is. It's what I do every week at The Sand Trap.

Sergio has underachieved since bouncing onto the scene at the 1999 PGA Championship. Like Big Don said, a lot of other guys have underachieved as well, including CHIII, Adam Scott, etc. They are all great golfers, and it's a little unfair to hype the possible comparisons and rivalries with Tiger. But it's part of the game.

I'd like to see Sergio finish some of these tournaments off and be a force next season. Unfortunately for him, his track record down the stretch is sketchy at best, and he opens himself up for criticism when he has these collapses.

I don't have a problem with him though. I think he's great for the game.

Maybe more like jealousy combined with making excuses ... like griping about the rain at the US Open saying, " the officials would have stopped the round if Tiger were still on the course."

    • Hi @RetiredOldMan!  I am glad to see you are still playing and having good scores.  I hope that when I am 79, I am not only able to play, but still able to produce as good scores as you have been doing.   I look forward to hearing more of your success and your opinion of the senior flex shafts.
    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.
