I love getting this (though I do feel a bit defensive).  I've gotten this message twice in the last month.   I feel like I've made a tremendous step forward in my game -- two major things have helped:  (1) my irons are hitting nice and straight, with very, very few fat shots recently, and (2) my short game has gotten much better, especially with bump and running w/ my 8 iron and my chipping with my sand wedge (thanks Phil!).

I'm looking to consistently score in the 80's this year!

In my Grom Stand bag:

Driver: Ping G20, 8.5 Tour Stiff
Wood/Hybrid: G20 3W, Raylor 19*, 22*
Irons: R9 5I - SW, TM CGB LW

Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi-Mid

Favorites: Old Ranch (Seal Beach), Ike/Babe (Industry Hills), Skylinks (Long Beach), Desert Willow (Palm Desert)

I suspect the USGA provides that warning because if the score is too much of an outlier on the low end it can pull your handicap down below where it really should be, and do you no favors.

How many strokes below "usual" was this score? (Just curious)

It happened when I accidentally tried to post a 171 once too instead of a 71 or something. Anything outside of a range (I don't know what the range is, but I'm assuming it's like +/- 5 or so, maybe more for higher handicaps) will give you the error in case you made a typo or something.

If you don't play or post very often you can get the warnings nearly every time you post. ;-)

i posted an 83 back in august and an 81 last week.  i normally post mid-90's.  however i had an 88 about a 2 months ago that didn't raise the alert.  i believe i can be a mid 80's player easily, i just make too many mistakes sometimes.  most of my mid-90 rounds contain a couple max score holes (8 for my handicap).   if i eliminate those, i'm in the 80's.  if i play smart on top of that, i can be low 80's.  easier said than done though.

So they're advising you to sandbag by not entering it? ;-) The system in use here automatically cuts you by one full stroke whenever you shoot three or more below your handicap. And the next standard recalculation is also based on your seven, rather than the usual ten, best recent rounds. So having a real good day is both pleasurable and painful!

It's the differential that sets off the alert, not the score. I can shoot high 80s at one course and not set it off, yet shoot mid 90s at other courses and trigger it.
