Hello all,

What is the preferred range of diameter offset between a shaft and a hosel. If the shaft is a .370 parallel tip, what should the I.D. of the hosel be for an ideal fit? At what point is the hosel too big and club head should not be installed? I.E. is .378 too much difference even if shafting beads are used.

I am mostly interested in what is the most ideal fit between shaft and club head.

.378 won't fit into a .370. You can use a shim to fit .355t into a .370.

Also, is shimming normal or ideal?

You don't have much choice in the matter. Shim or beads is the other choice. Shims are common in my example, but I won't use them. I know plenty folks that do tho. Just make sure you prep everything well including the shim. You may have to make your own as a standard shim probably won't fit. You can make a thinner grade shim out of pop can aluminum. I would used beads in that case or even better ready made beaded epoxy from Golfworks or Golfsmith. You can't even see the beads they are so small.

I shimmed a Proforce V2 into an R7Quad I had years ago, I didn't see any reason why I wouldn't do it, especially if you have your heart set on a certain configuration. I am not an expert by any means, but it shouldn't make a difference. Like Black said, make sure you prep everything and to use plenty of epoxy so it's well covered and the shaft and shim are bonded well and then your bond between shim and hosel

So what would be the best fit? If you were building a great set of irons and you had to ream each one to fit the shafts, what diameter over the diameter of the shaft would you ream to? Would a really tight friction fit be better than having a gap? Or would it be better to have a .001 to .002 gap all the way around?

Sorry for the picky question, but I'm interested to learn what is optimal. If you have a really tight friction fit, maybe all the epoxy would get squeezed out. Or, is it better to have certain amount of epoxy bond thickness between the shaft and the hosel...?

Thanks

Why do you want to ream? .370 hosel .370 shafts or shim .355t. .355t hosel .355t shafts, you're over analyzing. It's not rocket science.

    • Day 292 - Filmed some swings focusing on the same thing (setup, grip, wrist at the top).
    • Day 182 (31 Oct 24) - Shorter session today.  Worked with the 5i - setup, alignment and overall tempo - hitting into the net.
    • Thanks! It actually briefly dropped to 5.8 at some point in July, but it felt like it was too rich for my blood every moment of the whole two weeks I held the 'level' for me to sustain it. The term 'impostor syndrome' comes to mind.. :-)) I have certainly done better than I have in the previous years to stay the course in how and what I have practiced but yes, it's a high probability that I'm leaving a lot on the table.
    • Dang... in the realm of things that probably don't matter all that much, golf slumps are the worst. Yes definitely consult a pro ASAP. Get back to hitting it solid again. Hitting the sweet spot solves a lot of problems. For me it's always the latter. My confidence grows as I hit more and more solid shots, which are the result of continuing to improve my swing thru better concepts, better practice, etc.  Yea, this for sure. And also, without a professional there to let you know you "did it better this time" it can be unnecessarily frustrating and confounding working alone. It's not that you can't work alone; clearly, you can. But during rough patches, it's always smart to consult professionals. Lessons are an amazing place to take new concepts and turn them into feels that you are confident will work. It's still really cool you consider this your best ever season. Congrats on hitting 7.8 this year!
