I have been working on fixing my swing this winter. I spent many years flipping or casting the club, and it was time to get this sorted out along with some other swing issues. I working with a pro once a month and making good progress as well as working on several drills a few  times per week. One thing I have noticed is if I focus on a having my hands forward at impact I end up losing a full finish to my swing almost like I am playing a knock down. In function there really no issue with this, the more controlled swing with good impact, flies further, spins more and may have lower ball flight but still high enough.

I am wondering if other have gone through the same issue and how you resolved it?

impact is definitely more important. when you think of working on your golf swing, you need to do it piece by piece. its like a chain of events, good impact leads to a good follow through down the road, just as a good backswing will influence you to make a better downswing move. it doesnt happen over night, stick with it.

Also remember that "impact" is just a nano-second in time.  I was just working on extension today with my pro with a cool drill.  Take a 9 iron and swing half way back then use your body to bring the club back through impact and extend down the line while turning into a full finish.  You can then start feeling how the extension can influence the ball flight.  We know that extension is really the result, but what you do to get there is what this is drill is all about, and in the end it feels as if you are directing the ball after impact.

Another helpful image is that your hands are pulling the clubhead through to finish taking any hit out of the equation.  Using a grass whip tool or doing the Clampett sand drill while swinging to finish can help you feel this.

Good luck and I agree with Tim, it will come.

It sounds like you are hitting somewhat of a knockdown shot.  For a normal shot your hands don't need to be way ahead at impact.  One to two inches will do.  However, if your shots are better and more consistent with your hands further ahead than that, by all means do whatever works best for you.

I had a decent impact position but was chicken winging it right after.

I did half swings for a month, 2 months, making sure my arms were extended at the end and eliminated the chicken wing.

Thanks guys it is coming along, I am still not hitting as well as I would like, but I scrape around just fine, hitting 72% fairways and 53% green in my last 5 rounds. Distance is a bit of an issue right now with the current swing, but it could just be the cold weather. I still have lots of work to do, but I hopeful this will be the year I break into a single digit cap.

You should have no problem getting down to single.  If you can hit 50% of the greens and two putt, get up and down on 4/9, and avoid double bogey you are looking at a 77. You are so close with those kinds of stats.

I like the first comment you got.  Keep that left arm connected to the chest going back to the ball.  That will surely keep you from casting the club.  Did for me.

I par'd or better 15 holes on plenty of days and still not broken 80. But I am close - only 2 strokes away- and as I have shot even par for nine several times I know I am not far off from getting the index down to 9

So basically you are there if you can shoot par over 15 holes.  It is just avoiding the 3 blow-up holes that put you way over the top.  If I could par 15 holes or better on a regular basis, I would be a scratch.

'Basically' if I can do it 10 times out of 20 I could be really low.
