what about all the bird and animal feces on the course? Your outside spit all your want, just not on the green.

I don't have a problem with spitting in general. Like Iacas I wouldn't spit on the green or tees and wouldn't look favorably on someone who did. So, I voted for 2.

I find spitting to be pretty uncouth behavior.  In some environments it is perfectly acceptable, but those are few and far between.  Golf is not one of them.

What the hell are you doing.... crawling around with your face in the dirt?  I've never eaten dung while playing golf, even though there is goose poop all over the place.  I've seen guys lick their golf ball to clean it.... if your one of those then I'd recommend trying the ball washer.

It's gross.  I wait until I'm off the green and secluded in some bushes to pee, so please do the same thing when spitting.

lol, i think you are misunderstanding me. Im saying there is animal feces all over the course so it shouldnt matter if you are spitting in the grass with the poop.

I think it makes the person look like a caveman.

So spitting for me is a no no anywhere, golf course or street

EDIT: Pissing is different...no one would dare piss on the green or fairway ( I hope )...and pissing can be a must....spitting is never a must...unless a bug flies in your mouth or something

Spitting is what children do in the playground to make themselves look big and clever before they take up smoking and drinking. I think the person spitting for the sake of it is disgusting and am likely to say so if I find it particularly offensive or they're doing it repeatedly.

Some of the more ridiculous posts I have ever seen here... Get over yourselves.

I spit on the course, however infrequent, but not on the green/fringe/teebox/anywhere playing partners might walk.

People who say they don't spit on a Golf Course are full of it! They probably think they're poop doesn't stink also!!

Bull... I don't spit anywhere, on or off the course.  Why would I?  I don't chew tobacco, I don't hawk up loogees.  There is nothing wrong with swallowing spit.  You do it all the time eating and drinking.  I guess we were raised differently.

it's funny how some people think it's okay to piss on the course but not spit. lol. spitting on the course is like rain drops in the ocean. seriously if you can piss on the course you might as well be able to take a shit right? the geese at my home course do all over the place. if its not in a place where someones hand is going to get close to it like marking on the green or a loogie where im going to tee my ball up, i dont think its that serious (the spit that is)

Exactly!! Spit in emergency situations and the same for pissing since that is more acceptable!! L.O.L!!!!

I voted the second option, I don't think I have more than a couple of times, but I think some people are being a bit ridiculous about all of this. Do people spit? yes. Is it unecessary? yes. Will it continue to happen (hopefully off the greens)? yes.

My humblest apologies for being brought up with a little common decency.

Just because you find it acceptable to spit, it doesn't neccessarily follow that others do likewise. It's not about being 'holier than thou', it's about a difference of opinion. I realise it's 98% water and it's not harming anyone, I just don't do it myself.

Don't spit on the green/fringe or teebox and we'll get along just fine. I used to chew tobacco, but would spit at the base of trees or in bushes while on the course.

    • I'd have taken relief, probably.  You decide what interference is, they don't.  Unless you're in a competition, and an official can help make sure you get it right.  Or you might play two balls, under Rule 20.1c(3), if you're in a competition and want to be certain you get it right.  Of course, your Nearest Point of Complete Relief and Relief Area might have been further into the bush, in which case I'd have played it as it was.
    • I was out at the wknd on a course that I had never played before in a society. My tee shot came to rest between line of golden furz bushes and cart path.  I looked at the lie and figured I could advance this ball nicely down the fairway.  It wasnt the bush that was bothering me but the cart path. Playing partners were high handicappers ( I'll explain why this was relevant ) and only issue they saw was the bush, not the fact that my ball was about 12" from the edge of the path right along the OOB line.  They could not see how a concrete path that was almost 1ft in front of my ball could be deemed to be interfering with my swing.  I have spent lot of time and money to get my swing where I am coming down on the ball with -3 or -4 Deg angle of attack and bottoming out maybe 4 to 5" in front of the ball.   My club was most definitely going to catch the path.  The two guys I was with couldnt grasp this and said any relief I get would be from the bush ( 1 drop shot ) and not free relief from the path which because if they were hitting it then they would have no issue with the path. ie High handicappers only see whats behind the ball,  not whats in front of it.   Ask a scratch golfer to hit a ball 3" infront of a concrete path.  Easy,  just hit it cause they are not concerned with whats behind the ball as they will be striking a descending blow.  High handicapper on the other hand is going to be coming down in most cases a few inches behind the ball and will be put off by the path behind the ball.  I just punched it out from where it was as didnt want to upset any one.  So in short what would you have done.  ?

    • Ok thanks. I’ll be home in a few days after a several months traveling and once I get settled in I’ll be hitting the local courses and I’ll check with the area golf shops. A lot has changed in the last 30 years and I have some catching up to do.
