Do you use an "Droid" App?

The best GPS apps have a signal strength indicator, which helps greatly.  Being off by 25-30 yards is unacceptable during a round of golf.

I was using FreeCaddie and it was pretty accurate. Recently d/l SkyDroid and after 2 rounds on courses I know well, it was spot on.

I also have a Sonocaddie v100 and all 3 would give me the same yds + - 2 to the target.

I like SkyDroid best of the 3 as it gives me a satellite images provided by Google and you can log in and add different markers.

The cost of the SkyDroid is 1.99 and for the cost I don't think you can pass it up without trying.

Installed on Motorola Cliq XT and I had no trouble with battery life either time I used it.

i have golflogix also, but never get past 9 holes and battery i drained.  I have tried disabling some apps, but nothing seems to help much.  Its useless if you have to disable the phone to the extent that's its not a phone while using that app.  If there are some surefire things you can offer for help, much appreciated!

I have steered as many golfers away from Golflogix as I possibly can.  GolfCard is much better.  Even though I am still somewhat bitter at them for parting ways with OOBgolf, it's still the best app I have used.

OOBgolf has since developed their own app which is functional, but the GPS functions require a yearly fee while Golfcard cost me $8 like 2-3 years ago and I haven't spent another dime on it since.  The downside is that I lose out on oobgolf.com's database tracking because I can no longer upload scores there.

Anyhow, back to the original point: golflogix sucks but most people know of the name from the commercials on the Golf Network.  OOBgolf and Golfcard are much better.  Here are the pros/cons from my perspective:

GolfCard Pros:

-One-time buy-in for all features of the app in the Pro version (for me it was $8, it may be more now).

-Excellent features and stat tracking.

-Easy on battery (say an 8 out of 10 in terms of optimal battery efficiency).

-Includes GPS & scoring.

-allows for course marking via PC software.

GolfCard Cons:

-scores upload to ushandicap.com, which requires a yearly subscription for premium level of stat tracking.

-not as many courses are marked as oobgolf's database (probably 75% are marked, vs oobgolf's 95% or so)

-UI is only decent (say 7 out of 10 in terms of aesthetic appeal and elegance).

OOBgolf Pros:

-UI is simple and elegant.

-Solid feature set, although not as much as Golfcard

-Base level stat tracking on the oobgolf database is very good.  For a yearly subscription you can track even more stats.

-other site users can watch your "live round" as you enter your score throughout your round.

OOBgolf Cons:

-The ability to jump from hole-to-hole is limited because of the simplified layout.  The app is not as much utility as is Golfcard.  Much of this is attributed to the dumb-down style of many iOS apps (see below).

-Must pay a yearly fee to use GPS functions of the app (note: this is a separate fee from the yearly subscription for added stat tracking...another reason I dropped them.  I prefer a one-time buy in, even if it is a high fee).

-They are preferential to iOS with their development cycle (which is why I dropped them in the first place and went back to Golfcard even after they pissed me off).

I started with SbS on blackberry, but switched to SkyDroid when I went to an Android phone. Overall I like Skydroid better, but it does reset my phone from time to time on the course. It also seems to be a little better with the battery than Swing by Swing. I reinstalled SbS and tried it and over 2 rounds it crashed a few times, but I didn't lose any of my scores mid-round, I just had to restart the app.

I'm keeping both installed (SbS has the scorecard module that I paid for back in the Blackberry days, and I paid for Skydroid when it was only $1.99) and I'll mess with them both for a while before deciding on which to stick with.

I also just installed Easy ScoreCard Free Version to see how it is for adding scores on the fly, Skydroid doesn't do that yet.

(Edit) Skydroid usually leaves me with around 30 percent battery life remaining after a 4 hour round, and SbS left me with around 25 percent. I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, regular battery, on Verizon.

I have tried probably every GPS app there is and I like only 3 of them. My favorite is probably GolfCard because you can hit any where on the screen and it gives you the distance to that point plus from there to the green. GolfPad is also very nice too because you can do pretty much the same thing with it as you can the GolfCard. SkyDroid is nice but it seems to be a few yards more off than the others plus it drains my battery pretty quickly. Let me know what you all think and also if there are any better than what I have mentioned so I can try them out as well.

I use YourGolf. It's free, but I mainly use it for stats, though it has a GPS feature which does work well. Plus you can upload your stats and scores to Oobgolf if you use that.

I have YourGolf and Swing by Swing.   I prefer Swing by Swing as a GPS but I like the stats features of YourGolf, so I use one for GPS on the course and the other to keep my stats once the round is over....

    • It’s going to change but your basic setup feel should be about the same. Your body kind of adjusts to length and lie angle of the club. You’ll want to pay attention more to ball position as you change clubs more than how bent over you are. I understood what you meant from what your wrote.
    • Oh I probably was thinking the wrong thing or the wrong way when I typed the golf swing was more of a body swing (in my mind).  The in my mind part probably should have said in my opinion or based on what I have read.  Just meant the body needs to be involved more than the hands and swinging the arms while the core remains still.
    • The answer to this question is a very small change in impact can cause a BIG impact in direction. This is with the driver, but its similar with the irons... How much does an open or closed clubface affect your drives? | RoboTest Want to hit more fairways? The latest edition of GOLF's RoboTest highlights the importance of driver face angle. For a driver, 1 degree of clubface open or shut causes 10 yards of left or right. When you think the rate of closure for a golf club, how fast the club face goes from open (top of the golf swing) to square (at impact), 1 degree is a small quantity.  This means, when you are looking at video of your swing, you can see the exact same swing, but present the clubface in two widely separate positions. More so if you have swing faults. You can make the same backswing, but not get your weight forward well and hit a fat shot. You then react to this, try not to fat it so you thin it. Maybe the timing is off on the extension part of the downswing and you thin it slightly. Also, certain swing movements cause the wrists to flip at impact. The intent is still to hit the ball with the club. So your hands are going to adjust to find the ball. The more they have to adjust, the more difficult it is to repeat. Nope, it is way less mental than physical. If we could all think our way to a better swing, we would all be PGA tour players.  #GOLF IS HARD!  Beginners have repeatable swings, just bad repeatable swing. We all just need to make repeatable better swings.  The golf swing is a battle of making movements that allow the club to do good things. You results are from a bad swing that has a wider range of outcomes. Your outcomes are probably the following. Way more thins, fats, skulls than most. You hardly see PGA Tour players fat, skull or thin a shot.  The first principle of golf is FEEL IS NOT REAL. Meaning, we can feel things in the golf swing, yet it produces results or shows on video as something else.  You just set up to the ball. The club has a different length, so you need to adjust. For most your arms extend more out as you have a longer club. You also bend over less for longer clubs. It is just something you get used to. If you make a fist and stick your thumb out. You want that width from the butt end of the club and your belt buckle. Now, if you taller or shorter than most, then you may need to adjust the length of your clubs.
    • At address? I think so. Downswing and through? IDK. I doubt if a whole lot of golfers, if any at all, deliberately think "I have a 9-iron so I need to bend half an inch more through the downswing compared to my 8 iron".
