You can see almost every image that they're laminated. Laminated are basically made from plywood. Really good plywood though.

Were you wondering why no bids? It could be that using the word "persimmon" turned people off. Real persimmon has a unique grain. Very subtle. If you have a personal interest in the auction, do yourself a favour and Google it.

Just to be more specific, "persimmon" is a type of wood and "laminated" is a method of construction - one can get persimmon woods that are laminated.

Wood golf club manufacturers typically made the heads from either a solid block of wood or by laminating multiple layers together to form a larger block.     In both cases, heads were typically made out of either persimmon or maple as both types of wood are very dense grain and hard; walnut was also used but it seemed to be much less common.

Use of laminated construction allowed the manufacturer to create that layered look as seen in the photos of the woods you're inquiring about.   It also let them use a wider variety of raw stock, as they didn't have to have a flawless block large enough to make a single head out of.

Regardless of the wood used to make the laminate, the word "persimmon" should never be used alone when referring to a laminated head.  The vast majority of people thinking of persimmon are expecting the head to made of a solid block of wood.

Agree with all that has been said.  I also think that the most common wood for laminated heads was "hard rock" maple, hence another reason for not calling these woods "persimmon".

It has been said that laminate is superior to persimmon in hardness and moisture resistance, but most people who play with wooden headed clubs would prefer persimmon.

Having played plenty of both, I'd say the shaft, grip, and insert have just as much of an effect on feel as the wood. BUT, all things being equal, persimmon has a bit more chache. It's cooler, and why else would someone still bag or display one of these archaic things?

Well yeah, of course its cooler.

I think I play them for the same reason some people hunt with muzzle loaders or bows-nostalgia for lack of a better term. I do think I try to play inside my abilities better.  I know I can't hit it 300 so I don't try and as a result have more control. ( I can't hit my Titleist 905 300 either, but I don't know it.)

HAHA - I didn't check your signature before posting. I bagged a few persimmons last year and do it for fun, because to be honest, pretty much nobody ever thinks I'm cool.

Ha, I resemble that remark. I do it for fun too, but at least I can think I'm cool.

i'm currently bagging a laminated maple Orlimar Solitaire designed by Jesse Ortiz (his signature head shape is quite evident) which i creamed 305 yards last year (my longest on-course to date), stock shaft cut to 44" and all weight in the port drained.  also have Stan Thompson Gintys, some Rileys, and will be testing out various other persimmons to go along with my Louisville Earthwoods EWP puttter.

The best part of this thread is that it was revived so that we can all see that somebody created an account two years ago for the sole purpose of asking this question and then left.
