I'm just interested in how many people have actually achieved a double eagle.  I got a double eagle on a par 5 when I was 15 after hitting a 330 drive and putting a 7 iron in the hole.  It's my most memorable moment in golf.  I have also achieved so many eagles, I can't even count.  Is there some sort of statistic between handicap and eagles per year or something similar?  It's also kind of weird because as I have grown in age and maturity in golf, I have got less and less eagles.

I've never had a double eagle and I've been playing golf for almost 23 years now.

For what it's worth, here are my eagle stats since 2005. I was 1 handicapper :

Age 31, 2005, 4 eagles in 51 rounds.

32, 2006, 8 in 62

33, 2007, 6 in 75.

34, 2008, 7 in 69.

35, 2009, 21 in 135 (turned pro that year).

36, 2010, 13 in 113.

Never had an eagle(or double) in my two years of golfing. This will be my 3rd year by the way.

Closest I've come is on a Par 5 in which I hit my third shot to about three feet.

Career Bests:

9 Holes--37 @ The Fairways at Arrowhead-Front(+2)

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Home Course:

1) The Fairways at Arrowhead

2) Mayfair Country Club

I've only had a few eagles. couple chip ins and a couple putts for eagle. no double eagle though. I rather have a hole in one though instead of the double eagle. even though double eagle is a -3, still want a hole in one.

I had zero eagles in 2010. I just never got the putts to drop. One round I was on the green in 2 for all four of the par 5s. I was -2 with 10 putts on those 4 holes. Later in the year, when my putting was getting better, I didn't hit as many greens in 2. Golf can be cruel.

Oh, I didn't know we could include all our hole-in-ones on par 4s. Then I've had seven. This month.

I don't get it, are you trying to be sarcastic?  I actually did accomplish that feat this summer.

Of course I'm being sarcastic. Where I am it's still the dead of winter.

That's a great accomplishment! I have come very close to holing a par 4 once.  Albeit, the hole was 285 dogleg right over water with a massive tree in the way of the green.  But I hit my 3-wood purely with a high draw over the tree, yelled fore as I knew people were still on the green (can't see the green unless 150 yards out in the fairway), and according to them (who I knew), they said the ball landed on the front of the green and rimmed the cup before ending up 6 feet away.  So, I was very pleased to see the ball so close and hearing the story of how close I came to a hole in one, but the worst part was that I missed the 6 footer for eagle, and walked with a birdie.  But, a tap-in birdie is always a great birdie.  To save myself criticism on that putt, that green is the hardest and most sloped green on the course, so it was a tough putt.

2009, my first full season, I had 3.  One, I drove to the direct right of a par 4 and hit my lob too far and it one hopped and then sunk down the flag stick.  The others were on par 5, chip in and a long putt made.  Last year, 2010, I had 3 as well, but I had so many more opportunities.  No chip ins, just hitting lots of short par 4's from the tee and reaching some par 5's.  Starting to bug me now how many more chances I missed.  Oh well, can only hope for the same chances this year!

so when exactly did an Albatross become a "Double Eagle"??

I've holed out with SW for my one and only eagle. I've only ever reached one hole under GIR - It was a par 4 and I 2-putted for birdie.

I made my first ever eagle to close out a matchplay game on the 16th hole in an Irish Championship 3 years ago.  Drove a par 4 and holed the 25 footer to win 3&2

Never a double eagle in 37 years.  Lots of eagles - never even tried to count them. Two aces.

My handicap has never been below 10.  I chalk it up to having had a pretty good short game for about 15 years.  At the moment, my short game isn't what it once was (although its coming back since I quit messing around with a LW), and I'm not as long as I used to be, so the opportunities for eagles simply aren't there as often as they once were.

I looked it up and it has something to do with the 1935 masters where gene sarazen referred his double eagle to a "dodo" bird. that is all it said on a lot of websites. weird.

I never heard it called anything else until about 10 years ago.  In my 40 odd years in the game it was always a double eagle until about 1999 or 2000.  I don't know where anyone ever got the name albatross, and I won't call it that.

On PGA Tour III (SEGA Mega Drive) in 1993 or 1994 it was called an "Albatross". Not sure whether it's a European thing to call it an Albatross or not. It's always been Albatross in Australia at least. I think it makes sense to go birdie/eagle/albatross. But maybe it makes more sense to go double bogey/bogey/par/birdie/double birdie/triple birdie etc?

It's not just an Australian thing or European thing, I just called it a double eagle on the headline because that's the first thing that I thought of.  I use albatross as well, but I feel like in the states, at least where I'm from, most people are more familiar with the term double eagle.

    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.

    • So the question was posed today by some of my friends.  Is a pitch mark the same as a divot?  I thought NO, but they argued if your ball lands in another player's divot (made by club during a swing) this was the same as a pitch mark, i.e. the ball mark made when the ball lands
    • Original definition use to or still is how far offline you hit it. It might be better to think of it as consistency in retaining favorable launch conditions to optimize distance.   That heat map showed a gigantic 0-3% loss in ball speed. That is absurd. The true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. Good luck telling the difference if the sweet spot is under 3% in a sizable area. Especially considering variation in launch angle, spin, and outdoor weather.
