Golfshot GPS (around $30, one time) on my iPhone. Great app, kills the battery though.  GolfLogix is good as well, but I don't like paying on a yearly basis ($19.95/year or so for full features).

The only thing that Golfshot is missing that GolfLogix has is keeping track of club distances for you.  It's a pretty big oversight, IMHO, but supposedly they are "working on it". Of course that has been the case for over a year now.

SkyDroid on my Android.

2.99$ one time fee. Uses the phones built in GPS and Google Maps feature to create an overhead view GPS. Accurate to within 5 yards. Really was a treat when I used it for the first time.

Sounds like GolfCard GPS on iPhone. ;)

Use the search bar, there are a dozen of these threads with the same questions, and answers, in about a dozen threads already…

+1. golfshot is really good. It does drain the battery fast. I typically ran out of power around hole 15. Switched to using my iPad and now I can finish a round easily with about 50% battery left. I also have a morphie juice pack for my iPhone and that allows me to get through a round too. Like the stats golfshot logs. You can also look at the stats online.

I have used Golfshot for over 6 months now and it is great. I wouldn't mind a bit more analysis in the stats area but that is pretty minor.

On another note, apparently using an Iphone is illegal according to this guy . Hard to believe with so many people using the devices, so I think he's on crack but he does seem to think he knows what he's talking about most of the time.

k!4,

No I'm not on crack. If you don't believe me, the only blogger on the Rules of Golf , perhaps you will believe David Rickman, Director of Rules and Equipment Standards at the R&A;

Q. What about multi-functional devices, such as a mobile phone, with a distance measuring application?

A. On the course, subject to any club or course regulations, a multi-functional device may be used to phone, text or email – provided the purpose is not a breach of the Rules, e.g. you are not asking for advice.

When an application that measures distance has been downloaded to the device, the application must be restricted to providing only distance information in order to conform to the Local Rule.  If there are any other features or applications on the phone that gauge or measure other conditions that might affect a player’s play, such as a temperature gauge, compass or anemometer, this would render the device non-conforming regardless of whether these other features or applications are used or not.

As every iPhone has a built-in compass that cannot be deleted it means that an iPhone cannot be used as a distance measuring device, even if there is a Local Rule permitting the use of such devices. I do expect this to be clarified/changed at the end of this year as I have not been able to find anyone that can tell me how a compass can materially assist a golfer, whatever their ability.

I have been using Golfshot since the beginning of last year for both GPS and it's scoring capability. I have an iPhone 4 and have never used more than 40% of the battery in a round.

I use Golfshot on my iPad 2.  I had a different (and poorer featured but higher priced) GPS application on my Verizon LG phone, but really prefer what I now use.  The iPad 2 screen is so much bigger and I can see the course aerial quite well.  I use strictly a golf cart, so the iPad is on the seat to my right.  Now starting to use the scoring features of Golfshot and like being able to email the resulting scorecard to myself.  Btw, I have a gallon ziplock bag in my golf bag in case it ever rains again in Houston (virtually no rain this year to date, everything is drought-dry).  I have the 1GB (minimum) cellular iPad data plan from Verizon; the iPad is also my automobile GPS and all the other good stuff you can do with the iPad.  I probably use about 40% of the battery during a round, so no problem there.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
