Do you "slide", "sway" or "lunge" at the ball on the down swing?

This is/was my number one issue. I have always known it, and have struggled with trying to correct it. I have above average ability to compensate with my hands so therefore I have a good game, but to get to the next level I KNOW I have to correct the "slide." What is the next level? Consistently going low...

What does the slide do? It moves the entire body toward the target. Big deal? Well, yes... If your body is moving toward the target, your club's sweet spot, ball position, etc., is also moving toward the target and you MUST compensate to get "back to the ball" so you can deliver a good solid hit.

I have discovered a drill (video below) on my own (I'm sure this drill or something like it has been around for ions) that helps eradicate this swing flaw.

To see the "slide" just place your cursor on my left ear and watch how much forward movement there is in the first video, then how much movement there is in the second video.

I am a big time sway / slider in my swing. I dont necessairly go towards the ball, but more towards my target.

Many people believe sliding your hips is a good thing as long as your head doesn't move forward, as this moves your swing arc forward i.e. lets you draw the ball and helps you hit more solid shots due to having more weight on your front leg. Thats great if stop sliding helps you but I'd say the majority of people dont slide their hips enough to allow the above mentioned to occur

This is my number one issue as well. I worked on a number of different things this week including; loading my right side before starting the swing, pressing my knees inward, and swinging with a ball under my left foot.

All of which help me to stay back a little more. But it's mostly a mental thing for me caus I don't do it when I practice, only on the course under some "pressure". I need to get past this first.

I will try the bag trick.

interesting... i can only comment on myself. if you look at my before video you'll see my hips slide (slid) forward, but so did the rest of me. the result is not good for consistency sake. however, after one day with the "bag" drill i am staying still. now, my hips still move forward (just a tick) but they stop at a given point until i'm able to turn over the posted up "pivot" point which is the hip socket on top of the left femur. this anchors my head "dead" steady and i get the sensation of that ball being in the same place every time. then all i have to do is turn and release and the ball is caught near perfect each time. it's a very satisfying feeling.

i went to the course today and played 36. i hit a ton of fairways and most the greens. in fact, i was feeling so fearless that on the second 18 i stopped hitting woods off the tee and instead hit my three iron, even on all par 5s. my theory and instinct here was that i knew i was striping the irons so therefore i didn't have a risk of fatting a 3-i and therefore could hit 3-i, 3-i, SW and be home in three. in fact, that's precisely what happened ( on the longer par 5s the SW was a PW or 9-i ).

i really think this drill ('da bag drill') is the best thing i've ever discovered.

Im working on learning to slide my hips foreward.  Right now I have a tendency to hang back on my right side and it causes me to hit a push.

have you tried to actively release your hands at impact? look at all touring pros. their right hand turns over their left AND their left hand/wrist is very solid thru impact. this will likely fix your push/fade. look at angel cabrerra as a case in point. his hands turn over BIG TIME.

this, incidentally, is what i found today with this "bag drill" swing. that my ball fades just a touch. not a bad issue. all i did was allowed my hands to turn over and the ball went dead straight every time.

here's a slo mo video of me after the entire day on course using this swing after the "bag drill" had set in. you see i'm turning my hands over.

and here is the original "bag drill" showing how much it makes you stay back.

the bag drill is shown in the video i posted. in essence, take your golf bag and place it a few inches from your lead hip. now, swing the golf club. your brain won't let your body collide with the bag. voila, your slide/sway problem is fixed!!!

cautionary note: move all your long irons to the extreme left side of the bag or you might nip them with your hands after you make contact withe ball. AND, take longer clubs like woods out...

i just looked at the andrew rice "swing in front of a wall" drill. nice... bag drill much better IMO. why? uh, because you actually hit balls and there's no substitution for that with any drill.

The vids you show are basically what Im trying to learn how to do with my hips.  You slide foreward just a bit.  My problem is hanging back on my right side to the point where on the followthrough most of my weight is on my right foot.

Now that Ive been getting the weight over on the left more Im hitting much better shots.

wow this is some good info,personally i find myself on my backswing sorta gettting ready for my forward explosion and when i come down i find myself dropping down a tad then after contact poping back up. i gotta take some video of it



A quick example from my own swing which shows some of these elements. The swing is work in progress by the way. The hips get forward, but the head move forward too. On the right, my head is pretty good, it stays pretty centered from address to impact. You can lunge towards the target and towards the ball, which is seen from down the line.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
