i have a club without the face on it, so its pretty much just the shaft and the grip, i was wondering if using it to take practice swings would effect my game for the better or worse?

I find maintaining an awareness of the weight of the club head is crucial for staying on plane so for me using a headless shaft would ingrain terrible swing plane faults but that could just be me.

I saw Leadbetter using a lead pipe with a grip on it for practicing as the exagerated weight almost forces you onto the correct plane, this leads me to believe that using that naked shaft is probably not good for you.

BUT...I suck at golf so you should probably wait for some replies from the the low cappers;-)

I'd rather swing an actual golf club, or rather one with a heavier head, not one without.

In my opinion it's impossible to properly "practice" a swing using just a shaft for the following reasons:

  1. You'll never know where the face of the club is pointing at different points in the swing; it'll always be an estimate.
  2. You'll get used to an incorrect weight on your swing. You'll then swing with a proper club and everything you've practiced will go out of the window as the club will be on different planes, be a different weight etc.
  3. There's not enough weight at the end of just a shaft for your lag to feel correct (assuming you're 'swinging' and not 'hitting' or 'switting')

I have a broken old Benross hybrid shaft hanging around the office here at home. I use it to check my positions in the mirror but that's all.

For anything that requires a full practice swing my little hobbit house is insufficient as even on the ground floor the ceiling's too low to swing the club (plus the cats LOVE to attack my golf clubs so I'd probably end up with a humongous vets bill!) so I head out to my local course or the range.

I have a couple old worn out wedges, a 6 iron and a cheap-o driver that I keep in the living room.  I'm always swinging one of them around, expecially during commericals.
