I just got my brand new 710 ap2 irons, and i like them a lot, but im having one major issue with them. I seem to be hitting them a lot farther that im use to which leads me to flying the greens.. i know i just have to get use to the clubs, but does anyone have any tips for hitting the ball shorter with more accuaracy? my last clubs were callaway X-20s. i hit the 8 iron about 160, but now with the AP2 i hit the 8 iron around 175. Am i doing something with my swing to suddenly gain that much yardage between the two club sets? any help would be nice. thank you in advance!

The loft on the X-20 8i is 37* and the AP2 is 39*   so it could be that the shafts are different

3/4 swing?  Club down?  Choke up a little?  As a single digit HC, you should already have these answers, let alone ask about a change in your swing mechanics without a before/after video.

Hit the range and hit a dozen or so balls with each club and note your average distance with each club.

As newtogolf pointed out, there is a 2° difference between the two 8 irons.  The rule of thumb that I have read is that 1° in loft = a 3 yard change in distance.  That alone wouldn't account for a sudden 15 yard gain, so there are definitely other factors playing into it..... shaft, overall mass, club head construction, etc.

That's backwards.  All things being equal, that 2 degree difference should normally be shorter for him, not longer.  The steeper the face angle (lower number), the lower the trajectory and further the distance will be.

Being properly fit for the irons could account for a distance gain, especially if your old ones were just off-the-shelf and weren't fit to your swing.

Ah, good catch!  I just had the numbers in my head without double checking which number was for which club!

Anytime someone makes a change to their iron set, the distances follow right behind with that change. I have Titleist 710 CBS and when I switched from my previous set of Clevelands, I was absolutely shocked how much my distances on each iron had changed. After becoming used to the old set it isn't an easy task to change in a matter of a round.

My Solution,

Go to your local driving range, I would never go light up the links with a new set of irons without taking a look at my tendencies with each. I say hit 10-15 good shots with each and see how your distances are with each, heck if you really have to write these distances down on a piece of paper. Put that paper into your bag and next time your faced with a shot, determine your yardage and match it with the paper. Its a very juvenile strategy, but you will learn to fluctuate your swing and learn to hit distances after you determine how far you hit each club. Once you learn the distances, please stop referring to the paper, just for your followers' sakes.

Ive had the same problems as I am now using a delofted set of Irons that go crazy far. I used to run a 7 from 150 now I have to run a 9. What Ive been doing is when I way overshoot a green I drop another ball and hit 1 club lower and see how that looks. Thirty-Six holes in I'm starting to get locked in by eye and being able to pick the correct club it just takes time. Least you get practice trying to get up and down

You're a 5 handicap and you're asking advice on something so basic from a bunch of bogey golfers????   Is this a joke?  If you really are a single digit handicap then you already know the answer, and if you don't then I seriously doubt that number you have in your profile.  Strange question and strange thread.

By the way, I play the original AP-2 irons.  I don't hit them much different in length from any other club I've owned, but if I did I, would simply change the club I use for each distance. Any other solution (changing your swing or reshafting, etc.) is silly.

My thoughts exactly, at a 4 or 5 handicap I hope your not asking for help on how to hit an iron. How about we get that number checked out.

How about you re-read my question bud... I asked for advice on this sudden yardage difference incase someone else had the same problems and how they fixed it.. Didnt need any of the other crap to come out, just needed a little advice and not be questioned. THANKS.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
