I think by Michelle's own words, she doesn't have that mindset. She talks constantly in interviews about getting a little better each day, hopefully one day accomplishing this and that. Her stated goal is to make the cut. That's a far cry from winning. She knows good and well she can't compete to win in those venues.

Wie does not have that mindset. She has said so herself. Her only goal now is to make a cut, not win.

...my point being that the presumption that out of the 144 player field at the Sony that ALL are there to win...."not just make the cut"...that Michelle is somehow barred becuase she is honest?

Her only goal now is to make a cut, not win.

And she's no closer to making a cut on the PGA Tour than I am at the moment. Hmmm... what was that definiton of insanity again?

Hi all

i think that the Michelle Wie debacle in Hawaii is incredible.

She should not be allowed to play in a mens PGA tour event because she is a woman-she'll just have to accept it or is MW actually a ladyboy? Mens competitions for men and ladies for ladies..not too ridiculous is it?

Second point-i totally agree with Nick Faldo's comment on the Golf Channel commentary that playing in professional mens events and coming virtually last is not doing much for her mental health and psyche and will harm her performance in years to come on the LPGA tour-if she thinks that the LPGA tour is inferior to the PGA tour then i advise her to quit playing golf immediately, but i nearly forgot..she earns $20mn a year from Nike in endorsements!!!!..so really we should say that playing in Hawaii was merely a publicity stunt for her sponsors that has gone all wrong as it really is a freak show!!!

Third-if it is just a publicity stunt, then legitimate bona fide PGA players who are on the fringes..ie on the reserve list to play when players in the published field drop out,..... are being very unfairly treated as their right to earn a living on the tour has been interfered with as they have been pushed out of the field by MW..this is disgusting!!!

I THINK THAT THE WHOLE THING MAKES A MOCKERY of the PGA tour and should be discontinued. The tour should not be used for experiments in political correctness and social equality.

It's beyond me why this topic has 24 replies. Michelle Wie has stunk it up once again on the PGA Tour, and her story isn't new and fresh anymore. She is old news as far as I'm concerned, and it's definitely time to move onto someone else with a different gimmick.

Wie just can't cut the mustard while playing in PGA Tour events.
Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Well said bb69. MW should stay in the LPGA. I'm so fed up with listening to all the stupid hype about Michelle and the men's tour - who the hell cares! She obviously doesn't have a prayer in the men's events and is just boosting her paycheck with all the publicity. And making suckers out of a lot of fans, IMO. This has nothing to do with her as a person, or her academic future at Stanford, obviously.

If people want to see men and women play against each other professionally on a level field, then let's be honest and do away with the LPGA and its protection of the lucrative careers of women players. Let the women compete equally with men in PGA events, no discrimination whatsoever, and then we shall see what happens to the professional women's game. Instant catastrophe.

You can't have it both ways: a protected venue for female players, and then allow some women to take slots away from men in PGA events. It's hypocritical and highly unfair to guys struggling to make a go of it in the professional game. As to the sponsors, well they're just after some added media hype - which the witless media gladly gives them. We all know where the sponsor's interests lie, which would NOT be in the integrity of the game of golf.

It's over and in post round interview she sounded deflated and would not commit to what her next tournament might be.

The course played very tough for many of the guys (J. B. Holmes +8 today), she is quite a gifted player and handles herself well. In her mind she believes that she can do it, but admitted in the interview that it's not coming out. How many of us have been there or are stuck in the same situation, it just doesn't come out on the course. Reason being . . . lack of confidence, she doesn't have the confidence anymore to play with the guys. Inside she knows that she can't handle these courses. It's not that she can't play, but these courses are set up to be brutally difficult for the guys, factor in the wind and she struggles.

LPGA courses are a totally different story, not easy but nowhere near the type of difficulty as the PGA courses. On the PGA you have to be able to score from the rough and that takes strong hands, wrists, and she isn't as strong as the guys and had an injured wrist.

AMEN!

we are wasting time. We could actually be talking about golf and the men who play it. She is nothing more than a freak show at this point. She should have played at Stanford, I bet she can't beat college chicks.

    • This is my opinion as well. I would love to see the LPGA take the lead on this.    This.
    • I agree in general. The one way in which the viewer will notice the pace of play is just that "it's been an hour and Nelly Korda or Scottie Scheffler have only played four holes." Or if for some reason they show a lot of shots of players just standing around when they could be showing golf shots. But I think Andy Johnson said it most recently/best, playing fast is a skill, too. I would love for pro golfers to play faster. You'd see the players you want to see hit more shots in the same time than they do now. So I don't disagree with the pace of play stuff, and hope they can find ways to do it. Heck, the LPGA should leap at the chance to differentiate itself in this way, IMO. So: I stand by what I said in that the TV viewer really doesn't notice much about pace of play. It's rare when they do. I support increasing the pace of play wholeheartedly. But my top five reasons don't include TV ratings or viewership.
    • I don't think the viewer at home can pick up on pace of play, unless the announcers mention something. The telecast has the luxury of bouncing from player to player, which ensures we the viewer always have something to watch.  I think we would notice pace of play if the camera just followed one golfer for an entire round. Or  You were actually golfing behind the slow group Or  The slow group is the last to only group left to finish the tournament.  I like the idea of having a person carrying a digital clock, following each golfer. When the golfer gets to the ball and the group in front of them has cleared they have 60 seconds or they get a penalty stroke. Maybe a second violation is a 2 stroke penalty.  Or as I have said before, every golfer wears a shock collar!!!!! at 1 min 1 second that golfer if going to drop. It will take them a good 30 second to recover, leaving them with another 30 seconds to hit the shot. The course would be littered with golfers just convulsing on fair way from an endless cycle of shocks because they cant seem to hit their ball and keep pace of play.
    • This isn't the same thing.  This is entirely a time of year thing. Not a trend.  This is the COVID year.  There are many who think the Masters viewership was actually way up. The 2024 ratings being down is only for CBS televisions. It doesn't include anyone (including me) who watched it online.
    • Ha, I didn't even notice that "NFL competition" part… I just dismissed it on face because pause has very little if any role in TV ratings.
