walking 10,000 step a day or 4.5 miles a day can help you loose weight and more importantly help you stay healthy.  A pedometer for $20 or an free app on your smart phone can actually count your steps for free if your phone has a built in GPS.

If you look at this as a way to be healthy instead of loosing weight to look good will help you stay on course for the long run.  You are ahead of the game by already considering this concern for your health, good luck and keep a journal of your exercise program and what you eat everyday so that you are accountable for yourself.

When you begin to exercise for 2 week everyday your body will automatically crave the exercise and you will love the result that you see in the mirror.

If you're going to track progress using a weight scale make sure you weigh and record at the same time everyday.  You will fluctuate throughout the day and it can be very confusing and frustrating.  Personally I stay away from scales all together and use the best tool ever invented, the mirror.  Make sure you look in the mirror (full length) after taking a shower or something, before you get dressed, and be constructively critical.  Between a mirror and taking body fat measurements it'll be alot easier to keep track of your progress (at least that's what works best for me).

On another note, if you ask me BMI is a crock, I wouldn't give it the time of day.  In high school I was 6'-2" 240 pounds and 13% body fat.

In the four years I was in the Marine Corp I never weighed less than 230 and thus had to be taped for body fat despite never running less than a 265 PFT (physical fitness test out of 300).  Imagine my gunny's constant disappointment when they taped me and I always came back with 8-11% body fat, thus not being able to be labeled a fat-body and have to do extra PT with him.  Moral of the story is this, the BMI maybe applies to 25% of the human race, if I weighed what the BMI thought I should be at I would probably look like I was about to die.  I think it is antiquated and based off of a failed formula.

Use a mirror and shoot for the healthy body fat percentage don't get caught up on your weight.  I highly recommend Cross-fit (or an equivalent exercise regime) if you ever get the chance to use it because it emphasizes NOT focusing on single muscle groups and instead gives you a greater whole body general fitness.

I have to agree.  BMI is applicable for only a minority of people.  Everyone has different body shape, stocky, lean and skinny, athletic, etc.  I fall into the athletic body shape and if I had to go with BMI for my height, I would be labeled fat.  But I am on the muscular side and have 13% body fat.  I wouldn't trust BMI.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Im about 5'11" and weigh around 195-200.  I woudnt mind losing a few lbs, i think a good weight for me would be about 180.  Im 37 and have been roughly about this weight for probably the last 10 years.   I bought a bag boy sc 180 push cart from rockbottomgolf for $77 shipped(great deal) about 2 months ago as I have decided to start walking more this year.   Im sure some of the more expensive models are a bit lighter and fold up a little smaller as I noted those were a couple of the concerns that people had with this model(about 20 lbs) but it folds up small enough to fit into my mid-size cars trunk with plenty of room to spare for my bag so thats good enough for me and you dont really notice a couple extra lbs except whenever i have to remove it from my trunk and carry it inside to make more room in the trunk.   It is a huge improvement over using the cheap old 2 wheel push carts most courses offer and hopefully will last for many years and then ill probably buy another similar model when it does wear out.   You are showing good maturity in realizing you need to do something different at your young age about your weight, too often many people weight until it is too late to decide to change their lifestyle, unable to prevent the health problems that will result.   Dont get discouraged if results dont come as quickly as you would like, just keep at it and you'll get there.   Good luck.

I am in the exact same boat as you (except for the height/weight).  I am 5'6" and fluctuate from 170-175 and I am 35.  I picked up a clic-gear late last year and it was the best investment I had ever made.  I couldnt carry a bag for the entire round because my back would just give out on me halfway through the round.  Not only did I save about $15 per round but I started noticing differences a couple months later (only play 5-6 times a month).  The one sure way of figuring out if you are losing weight is how your clothes fit.  I would find that I needed to tighten my belt to the next hole about a month into it and then the next hole a couple months later.  My pants started dragging on the floor as well.

Good luck on your journey.  Just starting it is the hardest part.

I have been walking for one hour and sometime for two hours a day.  The keys is a comfortable pace and how many steps you take, the goal is 10,000 steps a day.  On my cell phone, I have a application that is called trainer and I track on my with my gps, how many steps, calories and distance that I walk in one hour,  approximately 5,000 steps, 250 - 300 calories.

walking is easy on the body and I listen to music while I walk.

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
